From CNet News - Another manufacturer is expected to start producing Pentium 4 chipsets that will use Rambus memory, a development that could help revive support within the industry for the memory standard.

"A chipset maker is in the final stages of negotiating a deal that will allow the company to manufacture a chipset that links a Pentium 4 processor with Rambus-based RDRAM memory, according to several industry sources. The announcement is expected to take place within the next two weeks. If another manufacturer comes out with a Rambus chipset, it would likely be seen as a shot in the arm for controversial chip designer Rambus. The chipset connects a PC's processor with other components, such as memory."

(Reuters) - International Business Machines has launched a $699 computer server based on an Intel Corp. microchip, bringing its lowest price down to near the same level as Dell Computer Corp. The IBM server, called the eServer x200VL, is based on Intel's Celeron microprocessor that runs at 850 megahertz, or 850 million cycles per second. The unit also has 20 gigabytes of disk-drive storage, about the same amount found in an average PC sold today. Previously, the lowest price point for an entry-level server from IBM was $759.

(AP) - Hit hard by the recent global electronics slump, Japanese manufacturer Hitachi is cutting 14,700 jobs, or about 4.3 percent of its global work force, and expects a loss of more than $1 billion this year. The cuts disclosed Friday affect 10,200 workers in Japan, or about 4 percent of the domestic work force, and 4,500 overseas workers, or 6 percent of the employees abroad. Hitachi employs 341,000 people worldwide. The cuts are expected to take effect by April.

(Product Announcement) NEC Electronics Inc. has announced its V850ES/SA2 and SA3 microcontrollers, the newest additions to the highly successful V850 family of 32-bit, single-chip RISC microcontrollers. These new devices are the first to use the V850ES core and are optimized for low-power, battery-operated portable and handheld applications such as two-way radios and audio players. The new compact V850ES core is built on the V850 family architecture and was designed to enable a wide range of low-power, high-performance products.

To meet these needs, NEC has developed the V850ES/SA2 and V850ES/SA3 low-power products and plans to expand the V850 family product line-up by providing internal peripheral functions tailored for specific applications. With NEC's continued efforts to improve voltage, frequency and power consumption for its V850 family, the range of applications for these products will broaden.

The new products feature ultra-low operating voltage (min. 2.2 volts) and low power consumption of only 30 milliwatts (mW) at 2.5 volts. While maintaining a performance of 21 MIPS at 17 MHz, these devices provide a high-performance, low-power ratio of 700 MIPS per watt. These integrated products have 256 Kbytes (KB) of flash memory and can be reprogrammed from a single power supply, allowing the system to be easily evaluated and upgraded. The V850ES/SA2 and V850ES/SA3 additionally come equipped with 256 KB of read-only memory (ROM) and 16 KB of random access memory (RAM).

Elsewhere on the web today:

Amdmb.com has posted a review of the Dual Athlon Motherboard, the Tyan Tiger M based on the AMD 760MP Chipset:
"Analyzing it the same way as I would any other motherboard, the first thing to notice is that the ATX power connector is at the very top of the board, getting it out of the way of the processor heatsinks and fans. The processor sockets themselves have a pretty tight fit."

GideonTech.com has a new Cyber Cooler P-5700 Copper Cooler Review:
"The unit is compared with some other budget units we've come across. At about $20 this might be something you've been looking for."

Tech Report has an article discussing AMD's New Naming Scheme:
"AMD's rumoured processor naming scheme is a poor solution to the "MHz myth" perception problem. It's deceptive. It takes advantage of the ignorance of the consumer masses, and it will be very difficult to effectively implement in the first place. In the past few years, AMD has won its legitimacy the hard way its performance and value put it on the map. Now, with Intel pushing beyond 2GHz, and AMD (at least at the moment) stuck at 1.4GHz, AMD is experiencing a little MHz envy."

Digit-Life has posted an Intel Pentium 4 2.0 GHz on Socket 423 and Socket 478 article:
"Although the core is the same - Willamate, raising of frequencies of these processors is the most significant tool of Intel. Now let me digress a bit. What kind of competition are Intel and AMD involved in? What are their goals and means? In the next part of the review we will try to analyze the situation."
