The Semiconductor Industry Association reports record sales for the year just ended, but analysts are quick to paint a morbid picture for 2001--no thanks to a slowing PC industry and economy. The semiconductor industry reached new heights in 2000, topping the $200 billion mark in sales, the Semiconductor Industry Association reported Monday. [Source: ZDNet]

We were recently given the opportunity to take a peek at ATI's next generation mobile processor, the M6, which will be known as the Mobility RADEON. Carrying over many of the features we have come to know from the RADEON core, there is no doubt that this latest iteration will be powerful, but will it be enough to help ATI parry the inevitable barrage of products NVIDIA has targeted towards historically ATI-dominant market segments?

"Several features of the Mobility RADEON help ensure low power consumption. Most significantly, ATI has incorporated Voltage/Frequency Modulation - a complicated name for throttling. When a graphics processor is running in Windows, it does need to operate at full frequency. Similarly, when the chip is running a 3D application, it does need the extra frequency to translate into performance. Using this throttling technique, the Mobility RADEON can be slowed down and sped up by the user, depending on the application in a way similar to what we have already seen from ASUS and their Smart Doctor utility."

Winfire Inc. and Logitech have announced a strategic marketing agreement which names Winfire as Logitech's exclusive retail marketing partner for broadband services that complement Logitech's QuickCam video cameras. Logitech is the leading maker of Internet video cameras with more than five million users of its popular QuickCam family. Under terms of the agreement, Logitech will market Winfire's DSL service through a co-branded CD-ROM included with each QuickCam camera sold through retail in the United States. The CD-ROM provides Logitech QuickCam users information about Winfire's high-speed DSL service and software which allows them to register for free basic DSL service or any of Winfire's more premium broadband services.

Today's Earthweb Feature: Dell's mid-sized notebook, the Inspiron 5000e, trades light weight in favor of more features. This is a mid-size, three-spindle laptop with near-full size features, and it has style, something generally lacking in the laptop world.
