(ZDNET) Nintendo has finally launched its GameCube console in Japan and the reception so far has been relatively low-key. Though lengthy lines were expected by the time stores were closing Tuesday evening, both Akihabara and Shinjuku districts, where game consumers gather, have been quiet. Less than a half-dozen people were waiting to buy a console by that evening, and by early morning Wednesday, the number did not significantly rise.

(Press Release) ATI Technologies Inc. announced that it is supporting GLSetup, an initiative to ease distribution of OpenGL drivers to end users. OpenGL is a standard application program interface (API) for the computer industry that powers many of today's most popular 3D games. GLSetup will help to ensure that no matter which operating system a user runs or which graphics card they are using, they will get the best possible performance from their application. GLSetup has been downloaded by millions of users and has shipped with such popular games as Quake 3: Arena; Serious Sam; Baldur's Gate 2; Tribes 2; Alice; Descent 3; Homeworld; Soldier of Fortune; and many others.

OpenGL is an important aspect of ATI's strategy to lead all sectors of the graphics industry. ATI's recently announced RADEON 8500, RADEON 7500 and FireGL 8800 boards all include OpenGL extensions in their drivers for optimal performance, unparalleled visual effects and a truly immersive gaming experience.

(Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co. and Compaq Computer Corp. said on Friday that their record-breaking merger was on track despite this week's terror attacks and the virtual standstill in financial activity. A Compaq spokesman said his company had postponed a Tuesday employee meeting and that executives would speak with industry analysts on Sept. 19 by telephone rather than in person in Boston, as originally planned. But otherwise the merger is moving ahead, he said, noting that anti-trust regulators in the United States and Europe must still clear the transaction.
