Xbox Special: NVIDIA Thinks Outside the Box

Sharky's Private Eye Returns: 65 million transitors. 1 billion operations per second, 140 Gflops and Bill's Harvard class ring. Well not that last one. But the rest is true (and we have the NVIDIA PowerPoint slide to "prove" it!). Maybe the most interesting part of the presentation is about what is NOT in the Xbox.

hehe that has to be one of the funniest damn articles I've read in a while.
Somewhere near page 5 when you spot the Luv bug (Herbie, not the virus) you'll know something is up. exelent stuffs.

By Kelley Cook September 22, 2000, 10:58 AM

You mentioned that on the X-box there was no place to plug in your Mr. Microphone ...

I would hope not, my Mr. Microphone does not AFAIK plug into anything.

It is a self-contained battery operated unit that you can groovily say "Hey good looking, be back to pick you up later" to the chicks in the convertable next to you over THEIR RADIO.

Hope I cleared up this very important point!

Hahah.. sounds like you know a little too much about Mr. Microphone.. hahah

    By I_Rode_The_Bullet September 22, 2000, 12:09 PM

When I read this article, I thought of FRANK ZAPPA! This is a GOOD THING. Frank would have liked (and understood) this article.

BTW, is there any possibility of AMPLIFYING the OUTPUT of my MR. MICROPHONE enough that it can DIRECTLY PERTURB ELECTRONS in the XBOX's native Digital DSL/Wireless Interface?

    By alexross September 22, 2000, 01:36 PM

Cheers Pyramid, glad you figured the same things we did about it. And quick, get back to Kyle's before he spots you here and kicks me all the way back to England!

Hahah Joan has to see this one. That is too funny. Yes you cleared that one up for me!

I feel like I've just fallen victom to a joke. Were the specs on the XBox accurate or "just joking" figures? Because if this article is true to the figures, what computer?

Just my opinion, but dang, was any of that article for real?

    By alexross September 22, 2000, 03:01 PM

Hi Lance, the specs were real... and the interview.. well if you looked at it from our point of view and made it a litle less rigid, those are some of the things we've picked up over the 12 months. It's also a safe way to represent some of that type of sensitive info. Sorry it didn't sit well with you. But thanks for letting us know.

Oh no, please don't misunderstand me, I wasn't saying I was feeling any negative way after reading the article, I simply thought that maybe, after reading this forum, I was an idiot and didn't realize... well put it this way:

The specs from the xbox are WOW. I mean, a 733Mhz system, 64MB (dedicated to gaming), the latest and greatest video technology, all the extras mentioned, that's awesome. Boasting 20x the GFlops of the PS2.. um.. 1,500x operations/sec over a cray? holy $41t. So no, I wasn't upset or anything, just VERY surprised.

    By Pap3rcut September 22, 2000, 05:16 PM

Just wanted to say great article. And PLEASE keep the "Private Eye" going. Where the hell else am I to go for that type of writing. Again, good stuff and keep it up!

That was the funniest MNFing article I've read in a long time. LOL, keep up the good work.

    By Sharky September 22, 2000, 06:43 PM

    Hi Lance,

You don't seem to have missed the point. I think you got the gist right there.

PS If you do ever have anything negative or an artilce leaves a negative taste in your mouth please do not hesitate to tell it like it is. How else can we get better?

    Hi Pap3rcut,

Thanks for the really kind words and I'm just glad you guys are not only smart enough to see the chalk from the cheese but can appreciate a bit of light-heartedness when garbling on about technology, that in reality is very rigid.

PS Sniff.. I didn't think anyone missed it.

Hey, was ATI's "Good night, Elizabeth" line on the last page a reference to the Counting Crows song by the same name? Just wondering.

Hilarious article. Your site seems like the only one left with a sense of humor (although, Gamer's Depot still has a bit left).

    Good show.

    LOL LOL LOL LOL
That was super funny and intelligent. You made certain things very clear for me. Even though it was right in front of my face, I had not put two and two together. Man I hate Micro Crap even more now. They can just shove their Direct X & their Active X up their X.
Feel like I am living in a totalitarian state.
Thank you for the article. It was fantanstic.

Seriously killerman thanks so much for the kind words. I'm glad you got the gist of the article. Joan and I tried to give you the stuff inside our head in what we felt might be an entertaining way.

I think that this article was very needed to lighten up the spectrum on things...i find it relieving when i see writing like this...hopefully the people 'up there' in these companies realize that this is how they look to the educated consumer. On top of being needed, that was hilarious...almost like an intelligently correct script from a jeffk movie describing the vid industry. I very much agree with the view on micro$haft...very not nice of them to hold up the progression of the industry and get other companies to blame it on themselves. Thanks for the article and the shared viewpoint.

Glad you though so l33t g0l4 and thanks for the kind words. It was actually quite a bit of fun to write and as I said... there's not much in there that has to be made up (other than the band camp thing).

I got some feedback from the folks involved and I think they realize they look funny at the end of the day.

Well, I have learned almost everything I know from this site and tomshardware and I will be the first one to come out and say that this is one of the least informative articles I have ever seen here. As for the article's humor, well I am not a big fan of TV shows so I really didn't get it at all. But luckily for me, I am one of the regular visitors to of msxbox.com, so I know about everything about this system, the points I feel that you have missed here.

Another good thought, can you say it in these words if you do another article on the Xbox (I think this is the end of the private eye), the Xbox is much more powerful than the PS2. I really will never buy anything Sony unless I have to and the reason is that I am disgusted with how much that brand is over rated. People will gladly spend the extra $100 on the Sony TV, radio, CD player etc. because there are a lot of people that think Sony is so far superior to any brand out there. This is the psychological factor why people are in denial that the Xbox is at all more powerful than the PS2. I know about computers pretty well and I could say it and back it up with many valid points but as long as someone with name notability says it, then it is taken as something that can not be believed. So far only game sites have quoted John Carmack saying something to that extent but that is not enough, we need to get the word out even further.

    By Alex September 24, 2000, 02:20 PM

Another thought, you shouldn't blame MS for holding up the industry. Like NVIDIA does, no other company have to ship DX8 complient drivers with their card. To play most video games requires a nice computer, one definately capible of internet access. I seriously doubt that any serious computer gamer never logs on to the internet to grab updates for the game. 3DFX, ATI and NVIDIA can just put auto update notifications that will check every so often while you are on the net. Anyone could get away with this stratagy.

that was funny. that was the best sharkyextreme artical I have read in awhile. Good job

Hi Alex (same name as me),
Glad we could help with some info for you in the past. Thanks for your comments and I'm sorry this one didn't sit well with you. To be frank here (instead of Alex), I have to say that the point of the excercise wasn't to compare it too much to the PS2 (If that's what you felt we missed out on). We were merely looking at two aspect
1)The technology that NVIDIA announced and what it could be used for with the Xbox and beyond
2)How the Xbox deal may have taken place (that was the strange bit at the end with the film references).

We've had a PS2 since early March and it's pretty clear that in terms of RAW power it isn't going to be as powerful as the Xbox. We all know that. The trouble is, Xbox isn't here and the PS2 almost is. The real battle will be the software. Whoever wins the war there, in my opinion will win the whole thing. It won't necessarily come down to who has the best technology.
