    By DoomLurker September 09, 2000, 04:24 AM

Whats your favorite first person shooter?? Quake 3, Unreal Tourney, Counter Strike, Half Life, Rainbow Six, Daikatana (LOL), ECT...

My favorite has always been Unreal Tournament. Gameplay rocks and graphics are great!

    By Humus September 09, 2000, 06:03 AM

Unreal Tournament... that's my fav. Amazing.

    By The_Avatar September 09, 2000, 12:24 PM

i like UT as well very intresting you gotta use your brain aswell as you skill (even though i suck at the game) Ive neer played soldiar of fortuen but that looks intresting, also Hitman looks hella nice

    By alexross September 09, 2000, 10:01 PM

    Arcadian,

Hitman and Hidden & Dangerous were just a bit to slow and tactical for me They appeal to a load of people though and I'm simply not good enough to play. UT on the other hand... Soldier of Fortune was one of those strange games I'd followed during its 18month development. When I first saw it and played, it was amazing.. then it took a bit of a nose dive until it finally got released. THe quake 2 engine began to show it's age too... Shame really.

    By Adisharr September 09, 2000, 10:02 PM

I STILL like TFC the best I may pick up a copy of Quake III if weapons factory arena is a good conversion. Anyone played it yet?

    $ .02

    By KR02 September 09, 2000, 10:20 PM

There have been soo many great ones, its hard to have A SINGLE favorite, but some of my fav's are:
    Blood 2: the chosen
    HALF-LIFE (Of couse)
    Deus Ex
Heretic (I never played the full version, but the shareware was great)

    By Aurora September 10, 2000, 12:09 AM

Right now UT is my fav! =D

    By Just September 10, 2000, 02:03 AM

Quake 2 has always been one of my fav's, quake is great too, pure adrenaline rush when i play DM. UT is great too, I play it at my friends house occationally. But I guess I'm baised since I've always been a QUAKER at heart...

RB6, well desinged game, I just suck at it =(

    By petecloss September 10, 2000, 11:05 AM

    Multiplayer - UT
    Singleplayer - Deus Ex

But then, that's probably pretty damn obvious from my reviews of these two. :)

    By Warin September 10, 2000, 04:50 PM

Single Player has to be Half Life. Havent played Deus Ex yet though.

Multiplayer has GOT to be Counterstrike. While it's not (yet) a stand alone game, just a mod, it has the most addictive and fast paced game play I've ever experienced. All I need to do now is get a group of friends to play with, because on public servers there's too much rush and not enough teamwork. But that's another thread all together....

    By DoomLurker September 11, 2000, 01:24 AM

Hmm, I never could get into half life / counterstrike because it was too SLOW paced. Seems like you walk around everywhere...to each his own tho!

    By OPRDZL September 11, 2000, 09:22 PM

I know this might sound crazy in this day and age of "supra-3d-whiz-bang-I-got-a-joystick-with-a-hat-keyboards-r-4-losers", but I STILL like DOOM and DOOM2. I especially love all the add-ons and mods out there for it. Ihe game has everything I have ever wanted in a FPS....lots of action and SIMPLE gameplay. I've tried Half-Life and Quake(1 thru 3) and I must say that I don't get why people love Quake 3 so much other than it is visually entertaining. I s**8 SOOOOO bad at it I can't even beat the comp!! All I end up doing is running in circles and dying by my own rockets! I also HATE the "3d-jump-off-walls" crap. Just go toe2toe and we'll see who's the winner

Call me a purist, but there's my 2 bits!

Slow paced??? I guess it's not Deathmatch.. but Half Life had..well..a story? And as for Counterstrike...you MUST do Speed if you thing counterstrike is slow!!

I'm probably going to take SO MUCH flack for this.. but here I go:

I loved Half-Life single player when I first started playing it. It truely seemed to have everything I had ever wnated in a singleplayer game. Towards the end, about 3/4 of the way in to the game however, I got VERY bored. The AI seemed to get.. umm... more stupid as the game progressed. The big boss guy in the pit I found had a lot of bugs. Sometimes he didn't react to you being there at all. I dunno.. characters and enemies just seemed redundent after awhile. It kept me totally enthused for so long.. then the satasfaction of playing the single player game just seemed to leave.

Counterstrike singlehandidly makes Halflife worth buying for anyone who doesnt have it yet (and its considerably old when you think about it)

If anything, mods for FPS games make those games almost limitless, or as limited as technology and creativity goes!

    By Sol September 12, 2000, 01:41 PM

I have to say Counterstrike or TRIBES, possibly UT also.

    By Blizzard September 13, 2000, 04:34 AM

Unreal Tournament is the best game ever made. Quake 3 sucks! Epic has made an excellent game, with great gameplay, graphics and level design. I can't wait for UT 2 !! Only problem is that UT uses to freeze Anyone know why ?

UT runs fine for me. Never freezes. Maybe you should list your system specs and go from there. Earlier on i had some problems with UT freezing but I upgraded my video card and everything is running fine now. I got a Creative GeForce 2 and it runs fine under D3D.

Remember Alien Doom ('course ya do)? Easily one of the best mods ever, certainly yet to be bested as a single player mod (although They Hunger is pretty cool). It wasn't until AvP came out that any game to do with Aliens (even commercial Aliens games) came close to being as good. :)

I think everyone disliked the Xen levels. They looked great but played badly. I hated the jumping puzzles especially (I've hated jumping puzzles since Wonderboy on the Master System and can only barely tolerate them if they're few and far between and done in third person). I couldn't do the long jump thing (of course, I only worked it out AFTER finishing it) so I ended up Gauss Gun jumping my way through the initial bits with jumping puzzles. The end boss was a tad dumb but it was fun delivering the final shot with the Glock, James Bond stylee. ;)

On a slightloy different subject, I was quite impressed with how Gearbox did the Xen levels in Opposing Force though. They took note of how people hated that part of Half-Life and somehow made them good. Roll on Blue Shift.

    heehehehehehehe

    Counter-Strike by far.
i dunno. it just, has somethin about it.

By Last Man Standing September 13, 2000, 07:34 PM

half-life was an awesome single player game besides the xen levels, i used the god mode 2 complete the xen levels, the end was pretty lame 2. My new single player addiction is now Deus Ex, what a brilliant game!, i 've played it several times and still enjoy it.

For multiplayer team game it is counterstrike, the graphics are old but gameplay rocks.

The good old deatch match is quake2, i never liked quake3, it is the only game i uninstalled within 6 hrs, i only played the ut demo, my computer is 2 crappy for the unreal engine.

The graphics might be somewhat old but they're still quite decent! excuse me! :P :P

I've actually had much more luck running UT on my PC than Q3, just for my video card really (TNT generation 1)

By Last Man Standing September 13, 2000, 08:21 PM

My videocard is also a tnt1 (viperV550), when i am running the ut demo at the lowest resolution (looks horrible) my average framerate is 15, which is quite unplayable.

About counterstrike, i have 2 admit the graphics improved a lot in the last few betas.

    By Humus September 13, 2000, 08:35 PM

    Blizzard:
Have you tried to install the 428 patch? If that doesn't work you may try detonator 2 drivers, many people have problems with the det3.

Actually, Valve is releasing Counterstrike as a retail pack. You get the multiplayer parts of Half Life, and the Counterstrike mod. Should be out soon.

And yes, the Xen stuff sucked. But I wont slag one of the best overall stories for some lame bits at the end.

    Heh

    Like so many people... HALF-LIFE!

    By mpitts September 14, 2000, 01:57 PM

    Quake and Half-Life.

Quake for the sheer terror it instilled in me. And the community it created

Half-Life for making me remember what it felt like to play Quake.

What's your processor and ram? i have a p2 400 and 64mb of ram and i actually play either in 800x600 or 1024x768 (or whatever)
    with options set fairly high
But each time i load a new level it does lag pretty much till i run everywhere then its ok

By Last Man Standing September 14, 2000, 06:01 PM

I 've a celeron 366 with 64mb ram, when i play ctf with 10 bots, it freezes a lot, i 've sound lag 2(i am trying 2 overclock my cpu 2 550).

Well it's sure that if you play with alot of bots itll go slower (a little to alot)
Usually i can play with 10 bots though, but it depends also on the map

coming. Anyone heard any news about it?

Single player for me is Half-Life (and I must be the only one who likes the Xen levels, but then again I'm in the minority by really liking Blood 2 also) and the They Hunger mod is also top notch.

Multiplayer=UT hands down (I just wish I had broadband so I could at least see who kills me), but I have problems with anyone who loves UT but says Q3 sucks. Q3 doesn't have the same teamplay goodness out of the box as UT, but they have too much in common to love one but hate the other.

About Q3, the only reason i do not like it as much as UT, and actually partially go up to saying that it's a bad game is because it runs so slower than UT does, and also because when i tried it online i was on a 33.6 dialup.. so my opinion could change, but something interesting that's coming soon is Quake III Team Arena.. it's aim is bassically to bring what UT brought with it's first release. Q3TA actually falls short (in CGW they did a comparison that shows why, and the catch is that it's going to cost... it's not a free addon. Nonetheless, those who really enjoy Q3 but are envious of UT would probably find it worthwhile.

I'm in full aggreement. UT is more fun in my book, hands down.

    By LDegrelle September 21, 2000, 04:47 PM

Definitely Half Life with the emphasis on CounterStrike. The action is just so much more realistic than Quake or UT. When I equip with a big gun, my character slows down and I can't maneuver quickly. Switch to a SMG instead and I'm dancing all over the place.

Those others just seem so phony with everyone running pell mell all over the place jumping and switching bwtween their 10 guns. Bleah. Maybe its because I don't have the reaction speed of a 16-year old any more . . . .

TFC also gets my vote, but CS is a little nicer because you tend to be a little more careful with your life.

Had no idea so many people still like Half Life. What engine does it use? Getting a bit old isn't it?

I like Quake 3 myself, even though I think UT looks much better. High hopes for the Q3 expansion, I can't play a game if it's not multiplayer. It's so friggin boring. When UT2 comes out it will kick ass I'm sure (if you have the machine to run it).

    By JohnnyTooBad September 22, 2000, 10:04 AM

i went from Res. Evil thru Unreal but became totally addicted to on-line UT CTF Instagib and haven't played anything else much since Nov. 99. there are some excellent servers w/nice people playing. the prob i had w/half life was the joystick config. UT provides better manueverability with the joystick + mouse which i prefer (tho most peeps use the keyboard). my system is modest: AMD 400, 64M RAM, TNT2. i run UT at 600x800 at medium settings and with a cable modem, it rocks on-line.
