  • Although it keeps getting colder, the chances of a white Christmas are slim and none here in Southern California. I can't say I'm surprised - it snows once every 15 years, if we're lucky. Even though the days of playing football in the park and afternoon bike rides have been put on hiatus, you can still get your daily dose of social interaction at SharkyForums.com, where we discuss daily happenings, hardware news, and other noteworthy events that transpire in the world of technology. If you get tired of talking tech, the Off Topic forums are free for your use as well. Just like Olive Garden, when you're here, you're family (and we don't charge for refills on the salad and breadsticks).

Each week we take several of the most popular/insightful/controversial threads and present them to you for easy digestion. Feel free to add your own thoughts (subtract the profanity, please) and help us multiply the reader participation here at Sharky Extreme (and you thought math was tough…). We've added links on each spotlight page so you can easily add your own comments and contribute to the debate! If your repartee strikes us as useful, humorous, or otherwise entertaining, it stands the distinct possibility of being featured next week. Without further ado…

    NVIDIA Buys 3dfx
That's right folks, graphics giant NVIDIA made a small acquisition in the form of 3dfx's patents and technologies. This will surely make the graphics industry more interesting since competition is slowly being eliminated - so what do you think?

    Is AGP 8X A Sham?
Testing has shown that AGP 2x made much less difference than 1x, and AGP 4x has made even less of an impact on performance. Now that the specification for AGP 8x is floating around, does anyone suspect that there will be any noteworthy gain?

    i810 or i815?
Intel's chipset designations are sometimes confusing, which is why we have written guides that can be found here. Generally, if you are seeking performance, stick to the i815, and if you don't care about performance (cause the i810 is pretty slow), then you might want to look into an i810 board. Since most of you crave performance, this should be a no-brainer.

    DDR Worth It?
We were given the opportunity to look at AMD's 760 chipset more than a month ago, and we have yet to see boards boasting this chipset widely available. DDR memory is still in short supply, so the question begs itself to be asked: is DDR worth it? The turnaround time for a DDR system from Micron is estimated at 90 days, so you will be waiting a while if you are in the market for such a system.

    Entropy Systems
Although this was posted in the Off-Topic forum, it is still an interesting bit of scientific material. What would your use for an engine that operated using thermal energy?

    On The Lighter Side
Since technology always gets a serious tone here at Sharky Extreme (um…), we thought you deserved a little comedic relief, compliments of CajunDave.
