Is DDR RAM worth it on an Athlon system?

Yes, but there aren't any motherboards that are massproduced that support DDR ram yet. Wait until the AMD Chips are made to support DDR SDRam, and can handle 266Mhz FSB (133DDR).

YES!!! DDR will allow the T-bird to remain competitive with P4 systems.

I emailed MSI about their K7 Master and they said it's already been mass produced, and it should arrive at stores around Christmas and the New Year

That's good to hear but can't DDR ram be used with any mobo setup and not just athlon? I'm waiting for dual fsb@266 and DDR setup with 2 durons...sweet!

AMD is the only manufacturer out right now to have DDR. However, VIA is releasing a chipset that allows DDR for Intel (I think it's the Pro266)

Exactly that would mean that Intel will still outperform AMD in the long run (Don't get me wrong I could care less which brand I have just as long as I 1)Pay little moola...and 2)Get to o/c it ). So as you can see is AMD only delaying their fate? Hmm..tough question with prolly an ez answer!

You mean motherboard chipset? MAGIK chipset does DDR, too. Gigabyte produced testing board for review sites but I am not sure that they released to public yet. I heard that it is good but AMD 760 chipset is slightly better. so let's stick with AMD chipsets. but.. of course it's more expensive.. around $170 average. DDR SDRAM price is almost double of regular ram(still cheaper than Rambus ram though) for what.. 10% overrall boost? It's upto you guys. It opens new overclocking possibility( Full 133MHZ FSB) but it is just on paper now until someone tests. quote:Originally posted by Phatman: AMD is the only manufacturer out right now to have DDR. no. ddr isnt worth it on athlon now. you WILL experience a problem with ANY new DDR chipset. wait a while, let the chipsets go through a few revisions, and let ddr be only 2-3$ more expensive than pc133 like it supposed to be. now ddr is far more expensive than it should be.

Yes DDR is worth it, DDR is what AMD was made for, ever since I heard about the Tbirds, I also heard about DDR SDRAM. It allows larger bandwidth and thus better performance. True there may be instabilities with the first boards, but you cannot deny the performance increase DDR will bring to and AMD system
