    Saddam Hussein Wants Your PS2!!
    By Grasshopper December 22, 2000, 07:46 AM

Has anyone heard about this yet, About Saddam Hussein acquiring over 1400 Playstations (PS2s were sold out, der)? Is this for real? They claim he wants to use their computing power to run his weapons systems. If I heard correctly, NBC News stated that the PS2 is X number of times more powerful than any personal computer available on the market. Now, I'm not a global market wiz or anything but wouldn't it make more sense for him to get a few hundred PIII or T-bird systems instead? Hell, he could afford a bloody P4 system on his salary. My theory is that this is a ploy from Sony to keep the public buzzed about it's latest console.

    By Grasshopper December 22, 2000, 07:56 AM

    I found this at MSNBC:
"Experts claim that the computer chip and 3-D video processor in a PlayStation are one thousand times more powerful than the most sophisticated computer on the consumer market today."

    The article is here: http://www.msnbc.com/news/506810.asp

    By Neo December 22, 2000, 08:27 AM

man... a thousand times more powerful than the best pc????can't be...refuse to accept the fact

    LOL! LOL! LOL!

    By cracKrock December 22, 2000, 10:12 AM

1000 times more powerful than a 1.2Ghz T-bird???? Uh huh, yeah right. I guess since you can't benchmark it there's no way to prove it's not true... so I guess the marketing guys can spout whatever crap they want. Remember, just 'cause you call it a supercomputer doesn't make it one.

If Saddam really wanted some computing horsepower, he'd go with a huge-ass Beowulf cluster. Say...512 nodes? That would rock!

    By Adisharr December 22, 2000, 11:22 AM

One word comes to mind - manure..

1000 times more powerful than a consumer PC? Maybe an 'E machine' but sure as hell not anyone's here..

    $ .02

Yeah, it couldn't be anymore than 118% faster than my PC. (Yes, I made up that number. )

    By Pinky December 22, 2000, 09:06 PM

WOW! So I was hearing it right when I thought they said 1000x more powerful! I was watching the news and heard that, and just exploded in front of my family! HAHAHAHAHA that's the biggest BS I've heard on the news in a while!

    By *-SiNcErE-* December 22, 2000, 09:24 PM

well, I think depending on what you use it for, I guess there might be some applications for PS2 that would run a thousand times faster. I dunno, just a thought

    By pompadorean December 22, 2000, 10:26 PM

then that would mean the x box is 2000 times more powerful than a pc(assuming what has been said)? just wondering.

    By Dude December 22, 2000, 10:33 PM

My Dad said that the PS2 has a 400Mhz core.

    By pompadorean December 22, 2000, 10:35 PM

the x box has a pentium III something. I"m not sure what MHZ i'm guessing around 733? plus it has nvidia behind it for the special gpu

    By slipgun December 23, 2000, 12:16 AM

It's time for Bin Laden to upgrade his weapons systems

    By Neo December 23, 2000, 01:31 AM

    i dun even think a ps2 or x-box can match a p4.15ghz w/ an gf2 ultra

    By pompadorean December 23, 2000, 01:35 AM

i don't think so either. maybe its because the components don't have to worry about an OS. I don't know if that's it but i'm just thinking outloud.

    PS2-no, X-Box-yes

The X-box will be running the NV25 graphics core (albeit in modified form). A P4-1.5 ghz with geforce DDR will get beaten by a P3-750 MHz with a GF2 ultra in any good benchmark (high resolution, high detail) becuase the computer is relying on the GFX card's T&L and fillrate (more fillrate than T&L in most games). So the X-Box, even with a p3, will roast any computer that's available TODAY because it will have the ungodly power of the NV25 (which takes almost all of the graphics processing load off the CPU). OF course, when the X-Box comes out, the NV25 will be available to us PC nuts and we'll have even better processors, but nothing we have now compares.

    By kreidel December 23, 2000, 09:37 AM

He can have my PS2. I am truly disappointed with it. Matter of fact he can have my 19" 810FD Mag Innovision monitor also.

    By pompadorean December 23, 2000, 10:34 AM

Can i have your monitor? I have an onld 15 inch

    By Acceptable_Risk December 24, 2000, 02:13 AM

You guys don't understand. There's an embargo or something on Iraq for regular computer hardware. There is no such restriction on game consoles. The PS2 has very strong graphics processing for its size and cost and could be be used for optical guidance in balistic missiles or wired together to autonomously pilot aircraft.

This was actually a concern when the PS2 was originally being built so Sony tried to place export restrictions on them just prior to release but it didn't work out.

    By Phatman December 25, 2000, 12:27 AM

Sadam is nuts. I just wish we could put him in jail

    By slick December 25, 2000, 03:26 AM

Well if iraq is going to use ps2's. Then I guess we will just have to run Itaniums or Sludgehammers.

    By CajnDave December 25, 2000, 10:59 AM

I was looking at the local clasifieds yesterday and there were 5 PS/2's for sale for 500.00. I hate scalpers

I saw someplace on the internet for $900.00

By Cam The CPU Man December 25, 2000, 10:26 PM

That is more full of shit than an elephant with no ass. A ps2 1000x better than a 1.2GHz T_BIRD would have to have to have to run at 1200000MHZ That is 1200TERAHERTZ!! Jeez and besides sadam has a weapons system left after we annhilated into submission? I think not

Sadam's weapons capability hasn't been checked in two years. Way to go Clinton and UN.

    By Sol December 27, 2000, 08:08 AM

Saddam needs to check ebay. or he can come over here and get one...
