    DVD a big improvement?
    By anatomiczero March 06, 2001, 01:00 PM

Is the quality of DVD a lot better than VHS? I have a 27" TV with S-video input also, which brand is the best for about $150?

The difference is AMAZING.. If you enjoy quality, you will NOT want to watch anymore VHS tapes ever

Make sure you get a model that can read CD-R and CD-RW's and can also play VCD's.. You may use that feature later..

Check out http://www.vcdhelp.com/ to see what players people like and to see which ones have problems.. So far my Aiwa XDDV370 is a solid player and can play MP3's, VCD's and read CD-R and RW's.. Has played everything I've thrown at it so far.. including..

    JP: The Lost World
    Matrix
    Little mermaid I & II
    Bugs Life
    Starship troopers
    Braveheart
    The Arrival I & II
    Aliens II collector edition
    Lost in Space
    Road to Eldorato
    Galaxy Quest
    Gladiator
    Toy Story I & II
    Shakespere in Love

    Can't remember others I own..

    Hope this helps somewhat..

Just like he said, DVD is a HUGE improvement....the quality is superior, and you can't get Dolby Digital sond on VHS . I'm so glad I went DVD when I did, because If I had waited, I would perobably not even be there now, and I'd be kicking myself. there isn't really a beter time to buy, the players are getting so cheap now...

    Or on a 19"+ monitor

    By BoogyMan March 06, 2001, 04:42 PM

    YES! Yesyesyesyesyes!!

Go DVD! You will love it! The sound is fantastic, the picture is sweet (especially on a digital). Go!

    Go now!

Well I'm going to get a DVD player, so is Apex a good brand? I'm thinking about getting this one but I'm not sure how good the quality is.

    By Edgerobber March 06, 2001, 06:24 PM

I'm so tempted to get a DVD ROM, but I'd have to get either a new gfx card or a decoder card - neither of which I can really afford - why is this world so cruel

    By sww March 06, 2001, 06:38 PM

Yes, it's a big improvement. I can say this, and I don't even have S-video yet. I'm still using composite in.

RIGHT - i'd take VHS and non-interlaced over DVD and interlaced. Dot crawl sucks big-time.

I have an Apex DVD player, and my cousin has the model you are refering to. very good so far. much better than VHS. except everything is in widescreen!

    By wiz March 07, 2001, 05:46 AM

ONce you go DVD you'll never go back...

Most DVD's come with the option to watch in widescreen or in regular view. Personally I like widescreen though as you do see more of the movie. But hey, I guess I'm just used to it by now...

Go to http://www.audioreview.com . They have ratings of just about every major brand DVD player on that site.

Buy a Samsung dvd player, they are feature filled and offer two models under $200, one is actually $129.00, good deal.

Thanx for the link, I'm going to stay away from the Apex and probably get this RCA

I've read that they don't handle some DVD's well and a co-worker has one and agrees..

Beware.. the GE units have problems and this is also a GE unit.. Check out Pioneer or Toshiba for most stable units..

GE? I thought it was Thomson Consumer Electronics, Inc.

(edit) Oh, your right they're made by the same company, they even have the same remote design.

My samsung is model dv-611 and i've only had problems playing scratched/rented dvds, no probs with new dvd/cds.

    By Booshanky March 08, 2001, 12:45 PM

I like my RCA dvd player. it's like the one in that link, but only the single disc version. it works great. havent had any problems at all.

My father got a Samsung and it would not read Disney's DVDs well at all. It just kept screwing up, all the time. Did fine on every other DVD though...

Cool, it looks pretty nice, I'll just have to go look at it to see if it's "the one"
