Help With Choosing a Good PCI Video Card
    By Aurora May 14, 2001, 09:16 PM

One of the computers we have here at home is a very nice HP Pavilion 7850. Of course, the video onboard well... isn't the best for games and this is the first time we've looked for GOOD 3D gaming PCI video card in quite some time. If anyone can recommend a nice PCI card for gaming, please start making suggestions!

    By PointlesS May 14, 2001, 09:52 PM

well there's lots of cards out there....you got tnt 2's...geforce 2 mx's...ati radeon's diamond stealth 3's...and voodoo 4/5 4000 - 5500....my vote goes for the voodoo 5 5500...the performance is nearly identical to the agp version and the gf2 mx's...radeon's...and all other cards don't come close to it's performance because they rely on the agp more...that's probably bs though and I'm probably just talking out of my ass right now so I'll stop talking...but I know that the voodoo 5 5500 is the best pci card out there..

your point is actually valid. Hardware T&L is slow on PCI bus. Voodoo5 doesn't have this problem so it's faster than GeForce2 MX PCI or Radeon PCI. I wonder what the Kyro II will be like on a PCI bus...(how do you do the eye-rolling thing?)

    By thomasrp May 14, 2001, 11:01 PM

yeah im going for a kyro 2 pci
otherwise voodoo 5 is the fastest
only comes a few frames behind the agp version

maybe hp doesnt have a fast fsb?
whats the processor speed on the HP supposedly below 500mhz there are problems when u play t&l game something
    from computer being to slow

    By ChencChris May 14, 2001, 11:21 PM

HP uses i810s when they make celeron comps, so it's on 66fsb. The speed of the comp will be severely hampered (I used to own one myself) You probably have a mini-tower, by the way, so don't buy a voodoo5, since it took me a long time to figure out how to sqeeze it in, and the power supply was almost dying on me since Voodoo5 drew extra power.

but you have to enable T&L for it to work right? i mean, if you choose in a game D3D non-T&L, wouldnt it work just as good as a voodoo?

How did you get the card in?will it fit across the bottom pci slot?the case is like a mid tower,256 ram , 2 40 gig hds ,creavtive dvd ,hp cdr burner and 17 sony triton flat screen...using a voodoo 3 2000 16 megs right now...i want the best gaming pci card that will be easy to install...trying to convince Aurora to rip er voodoo 5 out so i can see if it will fit in mine ...
    Thanks

The bottom slot will *barely* fit, but it should, since I was able to do that. However you have to watch for the Power supply.

    By Ashpool May 15, 2001, 05:33 PM

The Voodoo5 5500 is the very best you can get in the PCI trash area (Heh. Sorry, I have a bit of a thing against PCI video cards. Don't ask). There's nothing else that's better than it out there.

...well at least to the extent of my knowledge.

    By Kero-chan May 15, 2001, 05:42 PM

can one of you people who insist that voodoo is best pci because it has non-T&L support please answer my question?

    By Aurora May 17, 2001, 09:07 AM
