Sharky's Value Video Card Round-up - & Diamond Viper II
    By Miki October 30, 2000, 01:10 PM

I think that the article "Sharky's Value Video Card Round-up" should have contained (at least for comparison) also the Diamond Viper II Z200 videocard, as it became one of the cheapest (you can find it as low as 69 USD!) and still has good 3D performance and great video performance (the only card to rival ATI's video).

Yea this card should be used in the value card round up. But I know that the other cards will blow it out of the water on all the benchies except it they use UT.

So that's $59 too much, which you could spend on real hardware.
And why do you guys want to have it tested?
We could call this review: Vidcards from hell and beyond.

    By DRYNDRYN2 October 31, 2000, 01:42 PM

"which you could spend on real hardware."

Like what ? Not every one can go to momy and ask for MONEY! If u have only $150 a month and u have to buy food pay bills and shit how can u buy something like a Geforce 2 or RADEON. It's imposible.

"And why do you guys want to have it tested?"
Because it has not been tested mutch, a few reviews when the drivers was full of bugs. I want to see a review with the new drivers, I want to know whats changed, is it any bether, because this is the only Card i can afford. And im sure im not alone. It's even cheaper than a TNT2 Ultra and its faster, bether visual quality( its bether than a GeForce too).

    I'll tell ya...
I have a ViperII and for the first LONG while it was nothing but trouble. If I got into just how much trouble I'd be here all day, and you wouldn't believe me, to boot.
Anyway, it's been many moons and motherboards since my original purchase and with driver revisions (currently 4.12.01.9007-9.51.03, if anyone cares) the VII has matured into a fair performer, especially considering what it costs these days. Granted - all I play is Counter-Strike, so your mileage may vary.
That said, I wouldn't recommend it if you have a VIA 133A Mobo - especially the MSI 6309. I went through 2 Viper IIs and 3 of said motherboard before I decided that they weren't well suited (what can I say? I'm thorough). I still use a 133A mobo but it's a CUV-4X and it's a whole lot more amicable towards the Viper II, though I still have trouble with DirectX games...

    Such is life.

I know it has some problems with VIA chipsets, but its very stable on a BX/ZX and i815, So it will be perfect for me, i have ACORP 6ZX86(6BX86 2C BIOS - because the ZX bios dont recognize the Celeron 2 CPU) ANd my Savage 4(It also has problems with VIA chipsets) is very stable, i think it's time for me to get the next Savage
The new Viper II drivers r 9.51.12 Go get them at sdn.fgn.com

    By SKiller October 31, 2000, 06:14 PM

Ok, so even if we assume that these are mid-range cards (not low end) then where are the rest of them? If your ceiling is $200 then you should also include:

    AsusTek 16MB GeForce mx ~$100
VisionTek Geforce mx ~$105 (cheaper then the msi, but should perform the same and it's a well known brand name.
Leadtek Geforce DDR!! ~$150 that's right, a ddr can be had for that cheap, and it's a better value than the radeon.

And that's not including all the other value cards out there.

Hey Dude. Did you ever think about the fact that we work for our money? I can understand that you don't have the money for a top notch solution, this is a good reason to think twice before purchasing crappy HW.
Ask people who tried to use this card, they will tell you.
On the other side, you want to make us believe you know it all, by stating it's better than this 'n that. So if you are so clever, then why ask any questions at all?
You told us you have just 150 Bucks a month.
I think you should not invest you hard earned money in hardware that obviously wasn't and isn't worth it.

"I can understand that you don't have the money for a top notch solution, this is a good reason to think twice before purchasing crappy HW."

Yes it is, and thats why i want a review, with the new drivers and BIOS, compared to the Geforce 2MX and other "cheap" cards. And why not ? If it's so crapy than write a review so whe can see it, and avoid it.

"Ask people who tried to use this card, they will tell you."

Im every day on a S3 forum. And the most problems r with Win2K and older VIA boards.

"On the other side, you want to make us believe you know it all, by stating it's better than this 'n that. So if you are so clever, then why ask any questions at all?"

Because thats what the old reviews say.
It seems im not the only one that knows everything: "think twice before purchasing crappy HW."

    Someone sayd it's too slow

here some of the posts in a Savage forum:

"New (and old) D3D games have problems with Viper, but with OpenGL they work almost great. I'm playing Ground Control (1024*768*32), Homeworld Cataclysm (1280*1024*32) and the Serious Sam demo (OpenGL 1152*864*16) with all eye candy at max flawlessly. Beautifull textures, crisp image and amazing fps. Not to say that UT/Metal is unbeatable, I got 74 mean fps with the thunder demo (Anandtech, celery 850, 1024*768*32), A Gefore GTS2 has 68fps score on a 750MHz Athlon !!)"

I don't think it's slow, but i want to see a review, than i can be sure thats true or not"

Here u can go to the tread in the Savage forum: http://sdnews.net/cgi-bin/Ultraboard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=savage2000&Post=613&Idle=10&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=

As you can see yourself the "facts" you state are like "it runs flawless". So what means flawless? A fiend told me that Eliteforce runs "flawless" on his v3 in 1600x1200. I think it runs shitty on my GTS in this resolution with a faster CPU. Now you might understand that statements like these tell you nothing.
Btw, how could it be possible that an old vidcard with SDRRAM is faster than a new card with DDRRAM? Maybe something wrong with the benchmark? I dunno, but this is simply not possible.
If you check out old reviews they will say it's slow ( no matter where you'll look). So if they tweaked the drivers, my experience tells me they could gain 15 to 20 % increase in performane at best, and that would make the card still be a slowass.
    MeTal:
I like that API much (I own a Savage4), but as you will know the S2000 was incompatible with MeTal. How can you buy a product from a company that doesn't support it's own proprietary API? These S3/Diamond guys are obviously having some problems. The are well known for crappy driver support, which is als a good sign for a bad product.

I want you to understand that I'm not starting a flamewar here, but this product is REALLY not worth it's money.

"Now you might understand that statements like these tell you nothing"

Thats why i want a review.

"but as you will know the S2000 was incompatible with MeTal. How can you buy a product from a company that doesn't support it's own proprietary API? "

Yes ur right, it WAS incopatible, and in the reviews the Savage is not tested in METAL, it's tested on D3D, Metal is the fastest API on the S2K, and ppl run all games with the UT engine with Metal(Deus EX, RUNE...). And have u seen UT with the big textures ?. The Metal is very fast, and as i know the only card that beats the viper in UT is Voodoo5 runing glide. Try it with ur Savage 4 in Metal, u will be surprised how fast it is.

"These S3/Diamond guys are obviously having some problems. The are well known for crappy driver support, which is als a good sign for a bad product."

There is no more S3/Diamond. The Graphics devision(www.S3Graphics.com) of S3 is now part of VIA. S3/Diamond is now SonicBlue and they make only MP3 Players and that kind of shit.

    By DRYNDRYN2 November 21, 2000, 03:13 AM

Some ppl in this forum sayd that the Viper II(Savage 2000) is a verry slow card, that it's crap and bla bla bla... Well, check this in depth review of the Viper II:
    http://w3.swi.hu/s3savage/hardware/savage2k/savage2k_eng.html

It's compared to the GeForce 2 MX and Voodoo 4. The Viper is faster than a GeForce in 1024x768x32+(some times at 800x600x32) in all the tests. The image quality is very good(I'v seen it, it's mutch bether than any other card i'v seen) and it's 2 times cheaper than a GeForce 2 MX.

I was going for the GeForce 2 MX, but when i sot the review, i changed my mind. Why should i give $100 for a GeForce 2 MX when i can get the Viper only for $39 ?

Pls, befor u coment, read the review!
