British game developers have been around pretty much since the start of the industry, often bringing unique ideas and that special British touch to countless games such as Populous, Simon the Sorcerer, Cool Spot, Cannon Fodder and more. Today the British developer scene is as successful as ever. We decided to pick the brains of a few British games developers and get their thoughts on the British developer scene as it currently stands along with a few questions about their currently released and upcoming titles.
Sharky Extreme: To start with can you tell us a little bit about the company? How did it start, who works there and just where did the company name come from?
Fin Mc Gechie:
Mucky Foot has been on the go for 3 years now, originally set up by 3 senior ex-Bullfroggers. The company was formed out of the necessity for us to create games that were original and that pushed us creatively and we also wanted to be in control of our own future. The company now consists of a wide selection of talent and expertise from the early days of Bullfrog to talent from Argonaut and System 3. The name came along from 1 late night 3 years ago after several hours of beer and Pizza we finally out of a weekend state came up with.... Mucky Foot.
Sharky Extreme: Mucky Foot's first game, Urban Chaos, was recently released to mixed reviews from the press. Looking back at the project is there anything you would have done differently during its creation, and do you think it was the right game for the company to start with?
Fin Mc Gechie: We received mostly good reviews and have received a lot excellent feed back from internet sites and from people who have actually purchased the game. For a first game from a new start-up company I believe we proven ourselves as a more than competent entity as for what we would do different I think it would have a whole department of legal staff, secretaries and business managers to handle all of the stuff we had to learn on the fly whilst setting up Mucky Foot which distracted us from the development of the game. Now that we've found our feet and released a game we can move forward with a new confidence and focus on creating great games.
