Leaving the futuristic racing arena behind, Swedish based developers Digital Illusions have started work on their second racer for the PC; Rally Masters: Race of Champions. While, Motorhead, was one of the finest racing titles of last year with a splendid 3D engine, tons of neat effects, great sound and most importantly great gameplay, Digital Illusions has now strayed somewhat from the arcade racing genre with Rally Masters.

As the name would suggest, Rally Masters features all of the official tracks, cars and drivers from the Rally seasons and Digital Illusions has set out to offer gameplay which will easily match if not surpass that of its competitors. Knowing what they accomplished with Motorhead, we think they might just be able to do so. We hope that they will still offer some more arcade style gameplay for those of us that just don't want realism, hell, you can go drive your own car around for that.

The game engine behind Rally Masters is similar to Motorhead's. It runs via Direct3D or GLIDE and supports just about any resolution your 3D board can handle, in both 16 and 32bit. It also has support for some advanced features, such as, bi-linear and tri-linear filtering, high quality textures and much more. Here's just a few of the graphical effects you'll witness in Rally Masters: Environment Specular Mapping, Weather effects (Snow, Rain, Fog etc.), Transparent Glass, Body Deformation, Lens Reflections (there were plenty of those in Motorhead), and of course there are Sparks, Skid marks, Smoke, Water Reflections and loads more.

As Digital Illusions knows, no game is complete without some kick ass audio and they've set out to deliver. The game will feature no less than 10 metal / techno tracks to keep up the pace. You can also expect realistic car sounds and full support for both Aureal's A3D and Creative Labs EAX to ensure maximum performance and terrific 3D sound quality.

Roll on with the shots…
