  • Want to be a member of the PC game player’s fraternity? You’ll have to pass initiation first: play dozens of Star Trek titles to completion, then say, “Thank you, sir. May I please have another?” Another is what you’ll get this fall when Interplay releases New Worlds. This one is a departure from the usual ship command or adventure we’ve seen from the Trek license. Space battles are one thing, but what happens on planet surfaces?

That’s the question New Worlds tries to answer. Looking a like a cross between Star Trek and Total Annihilation, New Worlds is a 3D approach to futuristic land warfare between hovercraft and hover tanks. Players can play Federation, Romulan, or Klingon races in 25 solo missions. Technology for each race will follow the patterns of the television show, with Federation tanks using phasers, and Romulan tanks able to cloak. Like a traditional strategy, players will have to manage both combat, base building, and mining. Tank crews gain experience in the campaign, and become more valuable, which may prompt users to choose between sacrificing a colonist they are to defend, versus a seasoned veteran fighter.
