Did anyone (other than Blue) realize that last week Wolfenstein 3D was exactly seven years old? Wolfenstein 3D, for those of you not in the 'know', was the PC's first ever 3D (well 2D in terms of sprites) first person shooter. One could call it the Kaiser of the 3D FPS genre and since then we've had Doom, Doom II, Quake, Quake II, Duke Nukem' (the list goes on and on and on). We're going to have Aliens fighting Predators and we've had Skarrj performing gymnastics (otherwise known as AI) in Unreal. But what on Earth happened to Mien Lieben? Perhaps you've forgotten? In Wolfenstein 3D you ran around like a headless chicken taking pot shots at Hitler's hapless Nazi goons. Back then, the theme was considered controversial and some seven years on, publishers Interactive Magic are looking to bring back some of that um… 'Nazi-bashing' with Mortyr, their 3D first person shootem' up.
Picture this scenario: it's 1945, and World War II ends with the Germans crushing (shudder!) the British and American alliance. You play the role of Sebastien, a Nazi general's son, who is sent back in time to World War II to make amends. Sounds complicated, doesn't it? But back to the story- some fifty years on, the Nazis are in control of all the world's governments and the global economy (what a horrid thought). Now if you thought that the climate wasn't bad enough all ready, it gets worse. Severe adverse weather conditions have also tempered apocalyptic events on a global level, inciting riots, epic wildfires, hurricanes and other anomalies that are consuming entire cities. Basically, the whole world is up Dawson's Creek without a paddle so to speak. You do know where all of this is leading right? Yes indeed, what we're dealing with here is the scenario for a 3D first person shooter called Mortyr currently being developed by Mirage Media. Sure the theme hasn't been warmed to by all of the retailers in the US and perhaps it's hard to remember that somewhere underneath all of that 'bad press', Mortyr is JUST a game. And by all purposes, it looks like it's going to be just as fun as Wolfenstein 3D was back then. Whilst probably not introducing anything revolutionary, think of it as Quake dressed in Nazi uniforms and instead of killing aliens you get to kill Nazi's (in the future) in a computer game (we can't stress this fact enough under the current climate that the mass-media has created).
