  • Red Storm knows a good thing when they see it, and there's no doubt the Rainbow Six/Rogue Spear series is the company's leading franchise. In a creative twist, they're going to try growing the Rogue Spear audience further by targeting general users and enthusiasts who are not yet fans by building a hybrid game and reference product.

Like something you'd see on the Discovery Channel, the reference portion of the product will contain interviews with top experts in the fields of weaponry, covert operations, and special warfare. There will be data and photos on weapons, and instruction on which ones are suited to given situations. Interactive quizzes will exercise academic implementation of the information the user learns, and custom Rogue Spear missions will give the users a chance to put what they've learned in action. The quizzes are lots of fun, asking things like whether to insert a team into an operations zone by parachute, sea, or land, depending on circumstances like enemy strength, weather, and time of day. A behind the scenes look at the making of Rogue Spear rounds out Covert Ops Essentials. Sorry folks, there were no screen shots in Red Storm's press kit, but the reference screens look pretty standard, and most of you already know what Rogue Spear looks like.
