Here's a quick thought on the racing game genre: so many racers but so little innovation or differentiation. At least in 1999 it looks as though the racing game genre is finally starting to stray away from the norm. Enter British Developer ATD (Attention to Detail), who is busy putting on the finishing touches to their action packed racing game called (drum roll please) Rollcage, due for release in March.
So what's so different about Rollcage then? Why should we care? Well not only do the shots (see later on) look the part with full 3D acceleration (via D3D) but the game's concept seems to be an ambitious one. You'll choose from six armed (and dangerous) and indestructible vehicles and race around (now here comes the novel part) in a completely destructible environment. Basically, this means that not only will racing and blasting be part and parcel but you'll also be able to plow through buildings and destroy sections of the landscape in similar fashion to many peoples' first driving test. Better still is the lack of 'glass walls' that usually stop a player from wandering off of a track in most other racing games. Thus, driving on the side of walls, tunnels and on rooftops will all be possible. And plenty of buildings there should be, scattered across some 20 tracks. And if you can't 'drive-thru' them then you'll always be able to let rip with a few missiles (there will be plenty of weapons to pick up along the way). The game will of course come complete with multiplayer options in split-screen fashion or indeed over a LAN, which should provide some seriously good deathmatching.
