The third part in our continuing coverage of our recent visit to Rage Software in the UK, comes in the form of an Expendable update. If you haven't seen or read the preview we did late last year then here's a quick reminder:
Think Commandos or even Ikari Warriors back on the Commodore Amiga if you can remember that far back. Remember that top-down, run around and blow the living daylights out of everything type of approach to gameplay? It sure was fun if a little premeditated… Still in the realms of the modern-day 3D shooter, Rage Software has decided to bring back that 'age old' genre and revamp it with a full 3D engine. Say goodbye to sprites and the simple top-down play area, throw in a proper 3D engine, a few Rage Software-type explosions and a whole blood donor's lab worth of gore and you get Expendable. Got it? Good. We played it. Also good. In fact, it's become a firm favorite here at the SE labs (in multiplayer mode especially). Not only were the visuals aesthetically pleasing (more on that later) but the playability was intact and solid as a rock. Running around as a space marine and battling against hordes of aliens, or playing co-op was so easy to get into and yet so hard to master. Just as gratifying as it was to see aliens' gibs cover the screen, it was also just as excruciatingly frustrating watching your own gibs fly on the later levels. And gibs do fly in Expendable. There were times when the whole screen was red, which made Blood 2 look as tame as taking a trip down Sesame Street to see Bert & Ernie (before they came out of the closet that is).
