The graphics of Darkstone are fine, but that's all. Everything is rendered in 3D, mostly with good detail. Colors are varied and interesting. The graphics get the job done. There are some inadequacies though. You can only run at the low resolution of 640x480. Small important objects are often difficult to see on screen. Most things have a low polygon feel which cuts back on immersion. And instead of having your field of view run into the edge of the screen, Darkstone has a circular field of view that ends in hazy blackness at the periphery of the screen. This leads to some difficulty in navigation because you can't see what is far away from you.

The sound effects of Darkstone are, like the graphics, acceptable but lackluster. The voices of various characters through the game are actually quite annoying. In addition to talking far too slow, the voices lack emotion and humor. It's much like listening to an old person talk about how, when they were a kid, they had to walk through seventy meters of snow to get to the outhouse that also doubled as a bear cave. It takes too long, you don't care, you wish you were somewhere else, and you have to go to the bathroom afterwards. The music of Darkstone is excellent. While it is not the kind of thing we would listen to otherwise, it adds a lot to the atmosphere and immersion of the game with its mix of military and exotic feel.
