Unfortunately, it seems the designers of the WWWW apparently chose a Microsoft OS to run everything, and the system is therefore wide open to both hackers and saboteurs. Because of this blunder, the world has been cast into chaos and poverty as resources shift around haphazardly, destroying national infrastructures. Your mission is, using limited resources, to conquer the entire WWWW and bring peace to the world.
That's the plot. Pretty bad, huh? Well, it gets worse! Scary as it may seem, the plot is one of the better parts of the game. The name, "Wargasm," is moderately clever in the "carved into the door of a bathroom stall" sort of way. That is not a bad thing necessarily. But it stands out like a sore thumb because even in its mediocrity, the name is thousands of times better than the rest of the game. This game really stinks. Do you know why?
Wargasm uses the 3Dream engine for its graphics. It is not a terrible engine. A few years ago it would have been really impressive, but it looks mediocre now. Ground clutter appears out of nowhere entirely too close to you. Distant objects appear in bits and pieces through the fog. Shadows fall disconcertingly far from where you are actually standing. Soldiers are very wooden and move completely unlike real people. The ground textures tile obviously, even with bilinear filtering enabled. Battlefields are large and mostly empty, making everything look quite dull. Color schemes are consistently of the same bland desert colors. "Sucky" is the adjective we're looking for.
Fireballs are decent, but flame swirls in a stationary circle, completely unlike real fire. During an explosion, chunks of the target are blown into the air. After bouncing once, most of the particles and debris magically disappear out of thin air. I suppose the 3Dream engine gets its name from the dream-like lack of consistency that it provides. We should say something positive now. Gee, um, the sky looks absolutely wonderful! At least, it does in comparison to the rest of the game.
