  • In general, Nocturne is graphically ahead of its time, and although you need a pretty hefty computer to run it, if you own a suitable machine it'll do a fine job of showing off the power of your hardware. Just look at the screenshots (which, incidentally, were a reviewer's dream to take as any screenshot makes for a great screenshot in Nocturne) and take our word for it that it looks even better in action.

Thankfully, Nocturne more than delivers in the game play department too. Although the controls can be tricky at first since you are controlling the Stranger through a static camera view point all the times, you'll soon become accustomed to them, largely thanks to a convenient auto aim option. Once you manage to overcome the controls hurdle, game play becomes nicely challenging but thankfully not too difficult (just remember to talk to everyone twice and pick up anything that may be useful and you'll be fine).

The in-game action is simple but varied, extremely well done and involving. It ranges from wandering around a town rescuing townsfolk to battling it out atop a train against werewolves with only a clip full of silver bullets. At one point you even get to gun down undead gangsters with a tommy gun around New York while searching for a journalist who is known to have useful information for you. The simple yet fun game play is also made even more interesting by one of the coolest stories in years, involving four monster hunting missions, which you can play in any order. Understandably, Nocturne lacks a multi-player feature simply because it would not work in this kind of game, and with such excellent single-player missions, we can easily forgive Terminal Reality.

Spookhouse is filled with countless interesting characters, a few of which accompany you on some of your missions. There is Svetlana Lupescu, a half vampire half human woman, Scat Dazzle, a seemingly ordinary guy from the southern bayous who happens to be possessed by the voodoo Loa (a powerful immortal spirit), Baron Samedi and even a banished demon known as Moloch. The varied agents of Spookhouse really add to the already above par background and story of the game.
