August Extreme Gaming PC Buyer's Guide - Page 6By Bao Ly August 3, 2002Mouse: Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer Optical V3.0
Cost: $35 Picking the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer Optical V3.0 was a virtual lock, as it offers great support with our operating system of choice (Windows XP Pro) and is based on Microsoft's latest optical technology. This translates to better performance over their previous models, along with a bit sturdier design. The advantage of an optical mouse is the maintenance, or the lack thereof, and it's virtually impossible to get these bad boys dirty and interrupt that all-important online match-up.
Interacting with your computer through this mouse is quite comfortable, and convenient, with the Intellimouse Explorer Optical V3.0's two thumb buttons, two top buttons, and scroll wheel. One important thing to note with all optical mice is that they generally work better on a dark surface, and tend to have problems on highly reflective, or clear surfaces. A simple thin surface like the 3M mouse pads will solve the problem if you happen to own a chic see-through desktop.
Cost: $35
In the world of keyboards, Microsoft stands out as one of the most recognizable and trusted brands. There are basically two types of keyboards: the standard models, and the ergonomic (split) keyboards. No matter your individual taste, Microsoft has a model to fit the bill. For the fans of an ergonomic design, the Natural Keyboard Pro should be just the ticket, but if you prefer a more conventional keyboard, then the Internet Keyboard Pro will be perfect. Apart from their different layouts, these two keyboards are essentially the same and both include short cut keys, programmable buttons, and a 2-port USB hub.
Cost: $24
Every gamer should own at least one gamepad, especially if you have any interest in sports gaming. Very few gamepads offer such a nice combination of ergonomics, button placement, and quality, and at a better price point, than the Logitech Wingman Rumblepad. As the name suggests, the device can function in rumble mode, and will offer force feedback effects in supported games. This unit also plays quite well in conventional games with six buttons on top, two trigger buttons, two analogue sticks, a digital d-pad, and a throttle switch. This feature packed controller will definitely satisfy the needs of any gamer and can be found sitting on many a SE desktop.
