Once again, the only noticeable price cuts in this week's Intel charts come in on the XEON processors; but given just how much they've already dropped in price over these past few weeks, anyone looking to build an SMP powerhouse should be thrilled. Following this week's $120 drop, for example, the second-fastest Pentium 4-3.0GHz XEON can be had for only $335 each, as opposed to the $455 it was selling for just two weeks ago.
While $100+ drops on a couple of Intel server-oriented processors are nice and all, the real news in this week's guide is that new processors and chipsets are starting to find their ways into the marketplace and into the guide. And while this hasn't translated into wide-scale price drops quite yet, history has taught us that whenever one camp fires a round against the competition and takes the performance crown, it's only a matter of time until its opponent fires back and both start lowering prices on their previously highest-end processors.
