We see one monstrous price drop in this week's Intel chart: a $120 cut in the price of the 3.2GHz Pentium Extreme Edition 840, which debuted in last week's guide. But that price difference had more to do with it being a newly listed processor than anything else, and its retail price is still over the $1K mark. And the rest of the Intel chart, meanwhile, is far more mundane and contains only minor price drops.
Slowly but surely, new processors are trickling into the CPU price guide; and while they have, so far, been restricted to the Intel charts, we are starting to see pre-orders for the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+-4800+ line. We hope that the upcoming AMD dual core response (ETA July) will reawaken the competition between the two camps and start a whole new wave of serious price-cutting.
