While not quite as exciting as the AMD chart, in terms of price drops, the Intel list does still contain some pricing activity to keep things interesting. Add to that a number of chart debuts like the Pentium D 900 Series, and there's plenty of news to report as far as Intel CPUs go. In terms of standard processors, the 3.8 GHz Pentium 4 670 dropped by $23, and there were small cuts through the Pentium 4 600 line. On the dual core side, most Pentium D 900 vs. 800 series comparisons show very similar price levels, but the 3.2 GHz Pentium D 940 is looking like a real steal right now, as its retail price is almost $100 less than the same-speed Pentium D 840.
Thankfully, the CPU drought appears to have ended. With several significant price drops in the AMD charts, a handful of modest ones in the Intel charts, and new (or recent) products debuting throughout the guide, we finally get to report something other than "more of the same old same old." The coming weeks may also spell good news for Intel dual core buyers, as most of the AMD cuts centered there, and Intel's Pentium D 900 series will certainly put downward pressure on the old Pentium D 800 models. Hopefully, this week will be just the opening salvos in a renewed price war between the two camps.
