Intel may not be breaking any records in terms of price-cutting, but at least it's more exciting than what's going on in the AMD camp. The most significant price change was a $47 drop to the 3.73 GHz Pentium 965 Extreme Edition, which still remains north of $1K. There were a few other drops in the $7-$14 range, and the already-affordable Pentium D 920, 930 and 940 are now even better deals. The 3.8 GHz Pentium 4 670 fell by $13, and we expect this pattern to continue as dual core Pentium D models become the new Intel standard.
While this week's CPU price lists are certainly not a total departure from the stagnant results of the past few updates, it's still a welcome change from virtually consistent price levels. In one way, it is surprising that the AMD Socket AM2 processors have not driven down prices on Socket 939 models, but on the other, it may take awhile to filter down, as these are two different platforms that only compete against each other for new system dollars.
