Intel may not have matched AMD in terms of overall price drops, but there was some movement in the chart. Surprisingly, this activity did not occur in the single core area, and it was the Pentium D 900 series that showed consistent downward movement. This comes on the heels of the previous deep cuts and with the price drops ranging up to $20 on the Pentium D 940, the overall percentage decreases were still high. The only other significant price change was a $76 increase to the Pentium D 840, but this was a case of fewer vendors listing this processor, rather than an across-the-board price jump.
Overall AMD and Intel processor price levels showed varying levels of movement, not only in the dollar amounts but also in the area of activity. AMD started us off with some very nice drops on several Athlon 64 single core processors, while leaving their dual core Athlon 64 X2 and FX models mostly untouched. It was the other way around for Intel, as the Pentium 4 prices stayed put, while the Pentium D 900 series dropped again. This is only the first wave of AMD's price cuts, and we're hoping for even more fireworks next week, as well as seeing Intel's response.
