Weekly CPU Prices - Week of July 17, 2006 - Page 2

There are a handful of small price cuts to be found in this week's Intel processor chart, along with one notable one. That $23 drop in the price of the XEON 5080 would have been more exciting were it not for the fact that it's still selling for $851. But considering how rare significant price drops have become in recent issues, we'll take what we can get. The Core 2 Duo and Extreme processors will not make their debut until later in July, so it's tough to imagine any significant Intel price drops before that time.

General Comments

One or two modest price drops can be found scattered amidst a guide that is otherwise largely uneventful. For the most part, processor prices remain stagnant. Past years have seen processors go down around the end of July; so we're hopeful that we'll soon be seeing some downward movement in some future issue of the guide. In many ways, we're all waiting for Conroe to appear, and not only offer a new high-end Core 2-based processor line, but also help drive down prices of existing Pentium D and Athlon X2/FX models.
