Only one of the processors we track in the Intel sections of the guide fell by an amount resembling what we saw in the AMD charts. That processor, the 3.73 GHz XEON 5080, dropped by an impressive $100; but while a few other XEON processors decreased by more modest amounts, much of the rest of the guide was fairly sedate. Like the AMD chart, the Intel desktop processors showed consistent price levels, especially the once-volatile Core 2 Duo and Extreme models.
If you were expecting more of the same old same old, prepare yourself for a belated Halloween treat. For the first time in quite a while, we have three-digit price drops to report, with at least one such drop from each camp. Hopefully these will prove to be the opening salvos in a new price war; but whether they do or don't, it's nice to see some real downward movement in the CPU price guide, even if it was limited to only Opteron and XEON processors.
