This week's Intel prices are far more sedate than what we saw in the AMD section of the guide. A $14 drop in the price of the 2.4 GHz Core 2 Quad Q6600 is about as much as we have to report, in fact. As AMD continues to drop Athlon 64 FX and X2 prices, we hope the rumors are true that Intel is going to respond with some price drops of their own.
It's been a while since we've been able to report price cuts that are big enough to really get prospective buyers excited. Most of the CPU prices we track, we should note, are still holding fairly steady. But a handful of two and three-digit AMD price drops help to bring some excitement back to the Weekly CPU Price Guide for the first time in a while. This should only be the beginning, as at this point, something has to give on the Intel side. No matter how good the Core 2 is, AMD is presenting a serious value with their high-end Athlon 64 X2 prices.
