After months and months of ho-hum Intel prices, we finally have some significant price drops to report. These also congregated around the Core 2 Duo and Quad models, and included a $73 drop to the price of the 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo E6600 and a $175 cut to the 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo E6700. The best news we saved for last, as the retail cost of a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Quad Q6600 literally dropped off the table, tumbling down by $290.
It certainly took a while, but it seems we finally got an Intel response to the recent AMD price drops. And between a couple of three-digit drops in the Intel section and a handful of more modest price cuts scattered throughout both sections, this has been as interesting a week for CPU prices as we've seen in a while. And after promoting the Core 2 Quad Q6600 as the "first affordable quad core processor" Intel has finally lived up to that claim.
