Weekly Memory Prices - Week of Apr 29, 2002 - Page 2By Vangie Beal April 30, 2002
After weeks of static SDRAM prices, it is a rather pleasant surprise to see an abundance of price drops this week. While most decreases were in the $1 and $2 range, there were quite a few others in the $6-$10 range. Virtually all PC100 modules fell in price with the biggest drop being seen on PC100 CAS3 128-MB, which went down $7 to $19. PC133 memory also took a dip as almost all the PC133 modules we track went down in price. The most noticeable in this section was the $10 drop on 512-MB of PC133 CAS3 (now at $96). It's been far too long since we've seen such large cuts in the SDRAM price list. Those with a quick eye likely spotted the two $12 price decreases (PC2100 256-MB and PC2400 128-MB) as well as noticing lower prices on all PC2100 modules. Our memory price guide has grown this week, as we are now featuring PC2700 and have included 512-MB prices for all DDR listings. A recent announcement stated that Crucial would be offering PC2700 on their site, but we may have to wait a few weeks for them to ramp up. As more buyers move to PC2700, overall PC2100 prices drop consistently this week and hopefully we'll see this become a more frequent occurrence. This week RDRAM still manages to go its own way, bringing consumers the direct opposite to SDRAM and DDR SDRAM prices. This translates into no change in prices on some RIMMs or higher prices on others. The most important change is the $11 increase on the very popular PC800 256-MB RIMM. Overall memory prices are down this week, which is certainly good news for consumers. In some areas, this appears to be caused by a few online vendors trying to outdo each other in the price circuit listings. Competition and high PC2100 inventory levels seem to be the main factors of these lower prices this week, so there is no reason why we all can't hope for more good news next week. Do yourselves a favor and confirm the current price before making any purchase. Memory prices are volatile and while our weekly guide does illustrate overall trends, the actual dollar price could shift up or down quite quickly. And don't forget to take into account the vendors shipping policy and fees guide before buying online.
