Weekly Memory Prices - Week of May 20, 2002 - Page 2By Vangie Beal May 21, 2002
This week's PC100 memory prices remain steady, with the exception of PC100 CAS2 256-MB, which is down a healthy $8 to $37. We do see a bit more movement on PC133 SDRAM as a few modules have dropped slightly in price, including 256-MB of PC133 CAS3 which is down $7 to $57. Other SDRAM price decreases are in the range of $2 to $4. On a side note, PC100 64-MB memory is becoming increasingly hard to find. The prices on these modules remain constant, but we're starting to see fewer places offering it for sale. As more buyers move to the higher-end PC2700, we are seeing a few slight price decreases on other DDR, with the main focus being on PC2100. This week PC2100 256-MB dropped a full $12 to only $50, and we found a vendor selling PC2100 512-MB at $25 cheaper than last week; very nice indeed. RDRAM has historically been one category which usually stayed roughly the same week after week. As of late however the prices in here seem to be going up and down like a yo-yo. Examples this week include PC800 128-MB rising $8 to $38 while PC800 512-MB is down $3 to $209. With new i850E motherboards starting to hit the market en masse, we expect to see demand for RDRAM rise, so keep that in mind when trying to decide on when to buy. Overall memory prices are a mixed bag of goodies this week. It seems that PC133 and DDR SDRAM prices are down slightly in overall terms, while PC100 SDRAM and RDRAM are heading up a bit. Whether you're upgrading an existing system or planning on buying a whole new rig, remember that memory prices are volatile and while our weekly guide does illustrate overall trends, the actual dollar price could shift up or down quite quickly.
