Weekly Memory Prices - Week of June 3, 2002 - Page 2By Vangie Beal June 4, 2002
Looking over the SDRAM prices for the start of June, we see a fair number of "negative" signs, as prices are dropping in the consumer's favor this week. While the price decreases are slight, we are seeing them on both PC100 and PC133 modules. The biggest cut in PC100 was a $3 drop on the 64-MB memory. Bigger savings are in store for those looking at PC133 memory however, as PC133 ECC 512-MB is down $9 to $124 while others in this category have dropped up to $6 in places. It sure looks like a decent time to give SDRAM prices a good look through if you're considering upgrading or building a spare machine. Our extended listing of DDR SDRAM is certainly giving us the best indication of where the real price action is. This week, virtually all DDR SDRAM prices are down, save for a couple which thankfully remain unchanged in price. Overall, our guide is showing frequent price drops on DDR SDRAM as we see resellers and consumers alike shifting towards PC2700 and even PC3200. We found a couple cheaper PC2700 prices at a different vendor this week, and price matching shows that this week PC2100 prices are going down; right alongside the lower-end PC2400 DIMMs. For the past couple weeks, further decreases in RDRAM prices were nice to look forward to, but it would seem that the start of June has brought about an end to the RIMM price drops. The overall cost of RDRAM remained constant, except for PC800 512-MB which we found for $180. That is a $12 savings over last week's prices. Consumers continue to gain the upper-hand with memory prices this week, as it would seem online resellers and vendors are trying to outdo each other for the lowest prices. There were several very interesting pricing examples this week that could certainly be attributed to "seller price wars" rather than pure market trends. From an overall perspective, PC133 and DDR SDRAM prices are down, while RDRAM isn't moving too much in either direction. A good bit of buying advice is to always remember that memory prices are volatile and while our weekly guide does illustrate overall trends, the actual dollar price could shift up or down quite quickly.
