Memory Pricing Guide |
Weekly Memory Prices - Week of August 12, 2002 - Page 2By Vangie Beal August 13, 2002SDRAM prices remain largely unchanged, but the good news is that those modules which reflect a price change, have for the most part, gone down in price. Some pretty stiff online vendor competition over the past week has brought PC133 CAS3 256-MB and PC133 CAS3 512-MB down by a healthy $9. PC100 CAS2 128-MB is down 6% to $28 and we also see a $5 drop in the PC133 ECC 512-MB listing. This week's trip down memory lane takes us back to August 13, 2001 when the price of PC133 CAS3 512-MB had just dropped $19 to only $62. One year later the price rests at a whopping $110. Once again we have positive news for consumers; the DDR modules that have shifted in price this week have thankfully all been on the negative side. We see PC2400 512-MB which is down $12 to $124 this week and a few others have decreased by $5, $6, and we even see a nice $10 price drop. Falling prices this week can certainly lead the way towards a memory upgrade that your wallet can handle. RDRAM usually lags behind the other memory types in terms of price shifts and this week is certainly no exception. While both SDRAM and DDR have jumped on the lower-price bandwagon, RDRAM has changed very little. In this category we do see a slant towards price drops rather than increases, but these are mainly of the short and sweet variety. Overall memory prices are down compared to last week, giving consumers a bit of a break. While competition seems to be the main factor of lower prices this week, there is no reason why we all can't hope for a continuation of this trend for next week. Do yourselves a favor and check prices again before deciding whether or not to buy, as prices have been changing so quickly that the prices quoted in this guide is unlikely to remain accurate for long. Also, don't forget to take into account shipping charges before you buy online. Many online vendors clearly state their shipping policy and fees guide on their website, so check there before you check out.
