Memory Pricing Guide

Weekly Memory Prices - Week of September 23, 2002 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal September 24, 2002

SDRAM

Winding up the last guide for September 2002, we see SDRAM prices quite stable with very small price changes across the board. In the PC100 section both CAS 3 128-MB and CAS3 256-MB have dropped by $2, and this week we don't have any price increases at all on PC100 memory. PC133 modules look similar in price as we have just a few $1 price drops mixed with a single $3 price drop on PC133 ECC 512-MB, bringing its price down to $66 this week. If you are looking to upgrade an aging system or build a secondary machine, we suggest looking towards a stick of PC133 (of the CAS2 or CAS3 variety) that can be had for only a couple dollars more than the price of PC100.

DDR SDRAM

As per usual, DDR prices are the most stable of the bunch. The majority of DIMMs we list have a zero price change for this week, except for PC2100 128-MB which we found up $4 to $24. The only other price change of note was on PC2100 512-MB which went up in price by $1 to $99. DDR SDRAM for the most part is priced competitively for its performance, making DDR memory an extremely attractive alternative to the more conventional single data rate variety.

RDRAM

Continuing the rest of the price trends this week, RIMMs aren't moving a lot either. Despite seeing only a few price changes, RDRAM modules are moving on a downward slope. PC800 ECC 512-MB modules went down $7 to $256, while PC1066 256-MB (232 pin) went down $13 to $106. For those who still think RDRAM is way too expensive, don't forget that only a year ago PC800 ECC 512-MB was going for a hefty $292. We can see that over time the price on RDRAM has indeed been dropping; just not as fast or consistently as we consumers would like to see.

Overall

Overall memory prices remain pretty stable. Some may save a dollar here and there over last week - but we're certainly not seeing the big ups and downs of the past in our current memory guide. For those looking to upgrade their memory we strongly advise you to check prices just before buying as online memory prices can change so quickly, that our guide may differ slightly soon after publishing. So until next time, hopefully you will have saved a few bucks if you decided to buy this week rather than last.

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
