Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of August 4, 2003 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal August 5, 2003

SDRAM

This week we see only a few small price changes on PC100 and PC133 that are worth a mention. PC100 CAS2 256-MB is up $2 to $27, with the second PC100 price change being a $1 increase on PC100 CAS3 128-MB. Down $7 to $72 this week is PC133 CAS3 512-MB, but the bad news is the $13 spike on PC150 128-MB, which is now at $43.

DDR SDRAM

For the most part DDR SDRAM is up in price. A couple of DDR modules dropped the usual $1 and $2 for the week, but the big shocker is a $10 increase on PC2100 256-MB, which now sits at $28. This type of price jump is hard to take, but exactly a year ago today we were paying almost double for this module ($52). Most of the other DDR listings moved up by a buck or two, and we certainly hope the price slides back in the consumer's favor next week.

RDRAM

Unfortunately we don't catch a break with RDRAM prices this week. While most of the price fluctuations are of the $1 and $2 variety, we do have a $4 increase on PC800 ECC 256-MB and a larger $11 jump on PC800 512-MB ($199). The only lower price this week is a $3 drop on PC800 256-MB.

Overall

Overall memory prices are moving along to the same old rising tune, while price increases remain pretty scarce. It's been quite some time since consumers have been able to take advantage of any price drops, though we do hold out hope for the next few weeks.

Since memory prices can go up and down daily, depending on market conditions and availability, we suggest you use our guide to provide you with overall memory prices, but before ordering, please confirm current pricing on the vendor site. Some vendors state that their price is specifically for a phone order, while others offer the lowest prices on online orders. It's a good idea to check the vendor's website to see which is going to be the cheapest ordering method before you buy.

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
