Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of November 10, 2003 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal November 11, 2003

SDRAM

Those looking for a good bargain on SDRAM memory this week are sure to be disappointed, as the only price drop to be had is a measly $1 decrease on PC133 CAS3 256-MB. This week we also have a few $1 and $2 price increases, while PC133 ECC 256-MB and PC133 CAS2 128-MB both jumped by $3. From an overall standpoint, SDRAM prices aren't that bad, as these are the only changes we logged this week.

DDR SDRAM

Over the past month or so, any DDR SDRAM savings from one week, were subsequently lost the following week. This trend continues in our current guide, with small increases last week being followed by this week's small price drops in the $1 to $5 range. The biggest drop ($5) came on PC4000 512-MB, which is now at $150. When you take into consideration the ups and downs of late, we're not really seeing any end-user savings worth talking about. A good example is the PC4000 512-MB. Each guide listing since September 29, 2003 has showed a price change on this module, but today's $5 drop reflects only $1 in overall savings during this six week period.

RDRAM

While overall memory price changes are slim pickings this week, RDRAM is definitely the big sleeper of the bunch. Here we charted only a $1 and $2 drop for the week. We can always be thankful prices are remaining steady, especially for those in need of a little RDRAM upgrade at the moment.

Overall

Overall, the slight price drops gained this week average out with the similar price increases from our last guide, and basically keep memory prices in a stable pattern, We've noticed that Pricewatch.com is now ranking memory prices with shipping fees included (and separate as well), and hopefully this will encourage more vendors to offer shipping deals to maintain their ranking in the price list. Shipping costs are not included in our Memory Price Guide, so be sure to take this into consideration before making your online memory purchase.

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
