Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of November 24, 2003 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal November 25, 2003

SDRAM

This week, the price of PC150 modules remains unchanged, while an assortment of PC133 modules have gone up slightly in price. PC133 256-MB (both CAS3 and ECC varieties) are up by $2 each and PC133 CAS3 128-MB rose $4 to $33. The only SDRAM price decrease in the list is a nominal $1 drop on PC133 ECC 512-MB.

DDR SDRAM

Most PC2100 modules are down in price this week, ranging from $1 to $5. The $5 savings comes in on PC2100 512-MB, which is now at $55. PC2700 exhibits much the same trend, with smaller $2 savings on PC2700 128-MB and 512-MB modules. As we move down the list we see a multitude of $1 to $3 savings, and a nice $5 drop on PC4200 256-MB - now at $99. This week our only DDR SDRAM increase we registered, is a $3 jump on PC3700 512-MB, which now sits at $160.

RDRAM

RDRAM is a real mixed bag this week. Consumers looking for PC800 256-MB will find it for $75, or a $5 savings compared to our last price guide. If PC1066 256-MB (184 pin) is on your list, the best price from a reputable vendor we could find is $88; a hefty increase of $12. As always, when looking for PC800 ECC 512-MB modules, be sure to read the fine print and make sure you're buying a single module not a "Total 512-MB Kit".

Overall

After our last guide and its plethora of slight price increases on DDR SDRAM modules, we see the trend continues with small price drops on these modules again this week. Depending on your upgrade needs, you will probably be able to save up to $5. While those savings may seem small, it can pay off in an upgrade to faster shipping options. On that note, the best way to save money when buying memory from an online vendor is to check out their website and see if you can nab a shipping deal, which may amount to a greater dollar savings than any cuts found in our current price guide.

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
