Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of December 8, 2003 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal December 9, 2003

SDRAM

For the most part, SDRAM prices remain unchanged or have dropped in price. There are some exceptions, such as PC133 ECC 256-MB jumping $7 to $45 this week. SDRAM Modules which have dropped in price for the week include PC133 ECC 512-MB, PC133 CAS3 128-MB, and PC133 CAS3 256-MB. The price drops in our list are in the range of a mere $1 to $3, and overall, not a lot has changed on SDRAM prices.

DDR SDRAM

While our last DDR list showed a multitude of small price drops, this week we see a few bigger price drops. This week, prices on PC3200, PC3500, and PC3700 modules remain unchanged, but a fair number of PC2100 and PC2700 modules are down by $1 to $3. The biggest DDR SDRAM price drop is found on PC4200 512-MB which fell $6 to $197. The good news is that our only DDR SDRAM price increase is PC4000 512-MB moving up a dollar.

RDRAM

RDRAM prices show very little change, which can certainly be considered a good thing, especially considering the noticeable price increases in our last guide. The bad news here is that the modules reflecting a price change this week are going higher. PC800 ECC 256-MB is only up by $1 but PC800 512-MB has jumped up $7 to $199. Hopefully PC800 512-MB isn't what you were looking to upgrade this week.

Overall

As usual, DDR SDRAM offers the best savings this week for those looking to upgrade. While the individual price changes are small, it does help to lower the overall price of both upgrades and system buys. Lending a hand in lowering total costs this week, are a large number of online vendors offering free ground shipping on memory. While we don't calculate the shipping costs in our guide, this can certainly chop a bit off the total bill when purchasing memory online. So until next week - happy upgrading!

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
