Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of January 19, 2004 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal January 20, 2004

SDRAM

This week it's pretty quiet on the SDRAM front, and only two PC133 modules changed in price. These have resulted in higher prices, with PC133 CAS3 128-MB up $1 and PC133 CAS2 256-MB rising $4 to $48. Since PC150 prices not showing any change, the good news is that those are our only SDRAM price increases.

DDR SDRAM

For the third list in a row, our DDR SDRAM prices show small but frequent drops. Over time, these small price cuts certainly do add up, and PC3700 512-MB is the perfect example. This week we have a $5 drop, bringing the price down to $135, while only three weeks ago this memory was charted at $159. The other cuts to DDR SDRAM memory are those tiny $1 and $2 drops that we are all familiar with.

It's not all good news, and on the rise this week is PC2700 512-MB, which is up $3 to $38. The only other changes here are $2 increases on both PC4000 512-MB and PC2700 128-MB, so overall it's a pretty good week for DDR prices.

RDRAM

In the RDRAM category we find out biggest price hike for this week. It hit on PC800 512-MB RDRAM, and the lowest price found was $205, a $6 increase over our last charted price. Those buying PC800 256-MB will save a buck while consumers looking for PC800 ECC 128-MB will shell out an extra dollar this week. Other than PC800 512-MB, RDRAM price levels remain pretty constant.

Overall

There are some deals in DDR memory this week, but overall, you may not be saving a large amount of money. One area to keep an eye on is the welcome trend of vendors offering low-cost, or even free, shipping. Over the past few months many vendors have started to offer free UPS ground shipping on orders, and choosing an online store with low (or free) shipping rates may save you more money in the end. So until next time, keep an eye on those S&H rates and happy upgrading!

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
