Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of February 2, 2004 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal February 3, 2004

SDRAM

Coming into February 2004, SDRAM prices remain stable, showing only a couple minor changes for the week. Those in need of a new stick of PC133 CAS3 512-MB will save a couple of dollars while anyone looking for PC133 ECC 128-MB or 512-MB will pay a mere dollar more. Despite not seeing any price drops worth mentioning really, we also don't have any price hikes on SDRAM memory to report. In the end stable prices are often a good thing.

DDR SDRAM

Consumers looking at purchasing 128-MB varieties of DDR SDRAM are in luck this week, as these remain pretty stable compared to the higher-density modules. With a few exceptions, 256-MB and 512-MB DDR modules are up in price. PC2100 256-MB and 512-MB both are up $5 each and PC2700 256-MB and 512-MB jumped $2 and $5 correspondingly. The big price increase for the week is on PC3200 512-MB, which is now at $66, an increase of $8. Enthusiasts looking to purchase PC4000 512-MB get some good news, as the price dropped $6 to $149.

RDRAM

Our previous Memory Guide showed the biggest price hikes hitting RDRAM, but this week things look a little better. We do have PC800 128-MB up $5 to $48 and PC800 ECC 128MB rising $4 to $48, but that is just about it for the bad news. In terms of savings we found PC1066 256-MB (184 pin) for $3 cheaper this week.

Overall

This week we see a very slight price trend with the higher-end modules (512-MB and up) going up slightly, but the price changes are really spread out all over the chart. Your exact upgrade needs are going to determine price savings this week. One of the best ways to save money is to check out individual vendor websites and see if you can nab a shipping deal, which may amount to a greater dollar savings than the nominal price cuts can offer. So until next time - happy upgrading!

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
