Memory Prices - Week of February 16, 2004 - Page 2By Vangie Beal February 16, 2004SDRAMThis week, SDRAM prices remain stable as we have only a couple of small price changes to report. PC133 ECC 128-MB is up by a buck, while PC133 CAS3 512-MB is down a dollar in price. This may not spell savings for those who waited, but it is good news for SDRAM upgrades, as you're not going to shell out any extra cash. The DDR SDRAM prices show a bit more significant changes when compared to our last update. The PC128 modules we list have all gone down in price by $2 and all PC2700 modules except PC2700 128-MB (which reflects no change) are down $1 to $2 each. PC3700 and PC4000 prices remain unchanged for the week but we did find PC4200 256-MB for $90; an $8 savings, achieved by going with a different online vendor. Overall our DDR SDRAM prices won't break any records, but these are down more than any other memory type this week. RDRAM memory shows very little change, which may be considered a good thing, especially having seen a couple big price increases in recent guides. PC800 ECC 256-MB and PC800 ECC 512-MB are down by $2 and $3 respectively, while PC800 256-MB is up by $1 to $79. On a side note, for those who can remember back to a year ago we were going through some big price drops on lower-end RDRAM prices, while the 512-MB varieties remained quite high in price. Here is a quick comparison using RDRAM prices from February 2003, as compared to current February 2004 prices:
Each week as we go through the memory price circuit, it has become quite a trend for online vendors to offer 512-MB "kits" at a slightly lower price than a single 512-MB stick. This week we charted the price of PC3700 512-MB (single stick) at $135 but when you do the price searches you'll note a plethora of these being offered at prices ranging from $128 to $130. Both ends of the buying scale need to be careful, and make sure you're getting the 1x512-MB and 2x256-MB parts you need. In the end, doing some research on an online vendor and trying to nab a good shipping price can really add up in the end.
We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:
Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated! Until next week - happy upgrading!
