Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of November 8, 2004 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal November 9, 2004

SDRAM

Heading into November we see only a few price shifts on SDRAM modules, but the changes we do have are a bit larger than usual. PC133 ECC listings show stable pricing, but we have a $3 increase on PC133 CAS3 512-MB and PC133 CAS2 128-MB is up $5 to $45 this week. The only savings to be had on SDRAM this week is a nice $10 price drop on PC133 CAS2 256-MB, which is now selling for $78.

DDR / DDR2

While most DDR modules reflect no price change this week, those that do are down in price. We see a couple $2 decreases, along with nicer price drops of $4 on PC3200 512MB and $5 on PC4000 512MB. Additionally, consumers will pay $72 on PC3200 512MB, which is a $6 savings over our last guide. DDR2 prices are looking even better as Crucial has again lowered prices. Down from $119 to $102 is DDR2-667 256-MB, while even better news is the $30 drop on the price of DDR2-667 512-MB.

RDRAM

Unlike our previous edition, this week we see several price drops in the RDRAM category. The smallest price change is a $2 savings on PC800 128-MB. We also have PC800 512-MB down $8, but best of all is the $10 drop on PC800 ECC 512-MB, now selling for $189.

Overall

For quite some time now, our guide has been filled with a plethora of $1 and $2 price changes. While we don't have a large number of price drops this week, it is nice to see some of these larger cuts, especially on the DDR2 end. The only price increases we found were on SDRAM modules, and while several online vendors are now offering competitive prices on DDR2, Crucial's shipping offers still makes them the cheaper vendor overall.

Be sure to thoroughly read the fine print on any vendor's Web site before making your purchase and don't forget to find out the shipping cost, which is not factored into our guide, before you buy. So until next time, happy upgrading.

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
