Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of December 6, 2004 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal December 6, 2004

SDRAM

This week brings several changes on SDRAM prices. Those looking to upgrade PC133 ECC 512-MB will save $2 over our last price guide, but this is also our only price drop for this week on SDRAM. Several modules are up in price this week, but thankfully, the price increases are all smaller $1 and $2 changes.

DDR / DDR2

This week PC2100 modules show no price change, a couple of PC2700 modules are up in price by a dollar, and both PC3500 and PC3700 modules show no price changes this week. Those looking to save money need to head for PC3200 512-MB, which is down $3 to $70 or PC4200 256-MB which is selling for $82 - a $7 savings over last week. DDR2 memory is remarkably stable this week, with the only price change being an $8 increase on DDR2-533 512-MB.

RDRAM

True to its history, RDRAM offers very little movement again this week. Two modules come in with a $1 price drop while PC800 ECC 512-MB bucks the trend slightly and drops $7 to $189. While it can look discouraging when very little price changes are charted on a week to week basis, trends are more noticeable over a yearly change, especially with RDRAM. In December of 2003, PC800 ECC 512-MB was selling for $208, and it's been a little while since this was over the $200 mark.

Overall

It doesn't look like Santa, or anyone else for that matter, will be rushing out just yet to stock up with spectacular holiday system memory savings. Not a whole lot of individual modules have dropped in price (or gone up) by any large amount - which is good news unless you hope to catch a good price break to help keep the costs of upgrading low.

As always we remind you to thoroughly read the fine print on any vendor's web site before making your purchase and don't forget to find out the shipping cost before you buy. So until next time, happy upgrading.

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
