Memory Pricing Guide |
Memory Prices - Week of January 31, 2005 - Page 2By Vangie Beal January 31, 2005SDRAMPrice fluctuations on SDRAM were plentiful this week, although many of the changes were of the inconsequential, $1 variety. More noticeable was the $9 savings on PC133 CAS3 512-MB, which is now selling at $99. In terms of price jumps, we have PC133 ECC 128-MB up by $2 this week and PC133 CAS3 256-MB rising $4 to $66. Even with these increases the price change column for SDRAM looks pretty good this week. In a complete turnaround compared to our last report, DDR SDRAM is one of the most active groups this week, although the majority of modules didn't shift in price by too much. Down the line we see a multitude of $2 drops and increases on DDR SDRAM memory this week, but unfortunately PC2100 512-MB and PC3500 512-MB are both on the rise, increasing by $4. In terms of DDR2 modules, we see all but one dropping in price - and those looking for DDR2-533 512-MB will be rather pleased to see the price has come down by $11 since our last price guide. Of course if DDR2-667 512-MB is more to your choosing, you'll be paying $159, or a price increase of $7. Overall RDRAM prices are falling across the board, though the actual dollar amounts are nominal. Still, this is good news for RDRAM upgrades, as PC800 256-MB and PC800 ECC 128-MB offer up $3 in savings, while PC800 512-MB and PC800 ECC 256-MB provide a $5 savings over our last price update. Those in the market for PC800 ECC 512-MB will have to pony up $4 more than last week. Keep in mind that when looking for PC800 512-MB modules, read the fine print to ensure that you are buying a single module not a "Total 512-MB" (256-MBx2 kit). In terms of overall price movement, DDR and RDRAM offer the best savings this week. While most individual price changes are small, any savings is better than none, especially with the already-low price levels of most system memory. When scouring prices of online dealers, it is a good idea to look for reputable vendors who don't make money off shipping costs; remember this is a cost not factored into our guide and it will help keep your final purchase price low.
We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:
Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated! Until next week - happy upgrading!
