Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of June 20, 2005 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal June 20, 2005

SDRAM

Much like the preceding weeks, our SDRAM price listings show very few changes, and those that do reflect a price drop are very nominal indeed. Anyone shopping for PC133 ECC 256-MB or PC133 ECC 512-MB will only find savings of $1 this week, however PC133 CAS2 256-MB is down $3 to $66. Our only SDRAM price increase comes in on PC133 CAS2 128-MB now at $14, which is a $4 increase over our last guide.

DDR / DDR2

This week, our selection of DDR and DDR2 entries shows the largest number of price changes this week - some bringing savings for consumers and others, unfortunately resulting in higher prices. Starting with DDR modules, we have three showing small $1 price drops, along with some DDR modules showing price cuts or spikes in the $2 to $3 range. PC2700 256-MB and PC3700 256-MB both jumped in price by $4 each, and if PC3700 512-MB is on your upgrade list, then the $14 increase to $154 may have you waiting a bit longer before buying.

DDR2 prices are certainly worth a second look this week, as we found three modules that dropped in price recently. While DDR2-533 256-MB and DDR2-533 512-MB offer only meager $1 and $2 savings, the $8 price cut on DDR2-667 512-MB, which now sells for $130, makes this memory option worth consideration.

RDRAM

While our last guide didn't show a single RDRAM price change, this week we have some activity worth mentioning. Those looking for PC800 ECC 256-MB will find the price up by $2, while PC800 ECC 128-MB has increased $4 to $42. Not all is bad news in the RDRAM market, as PC800 512-MB is down by $5 and is now selling at $140 online.

Overall

This week the amount of money saved on a system memory buy really comes down to the exact type you need, as there is very little in the way of standard trends by type or speed. DDR2 memory offers the best deals, while DDR and SDRAM prices are nothing out of the ordinary, with the exception of the $14 increase on PC3700 512-MB. The best way to save money is to check out the vendor websites and see if you can nab a shipping deal, which may amount to a greater dollar savings than any of the price cuts can offer. So until next week, happy upgrading.

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
