Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of July 18, 2005 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal July 18, 2005

SDRAM

Compared to our last guide, we're seeing a little more movement on SDRAM prices, in terms of both increases and decreases. PC133 ECC 128-MB and PC133 CAS3 128-MB are both up in price by $3 this week, while PC150 256-MB rose $4 to $55. If PC133 CAS3 256-MB is on your watch list, you'll be pleased to see the $6 price drop, but countering that savings is a $6 increase on PC133 CAS2 256MB, now selling for $72. Overall SDRAM prices are quite stable with the exception of those few price changes.

DDR / DDR2

DDR SDRAM modules also remain relatively unchanged this week, and we found only limited price fluctuations. There are a few modules offering smaller $1 and $2 savings along with a bit higher $4 price drop on PC4200 512-MB, which now sells for $180. Savings on PC2700 512-MB and PC3200 256-MB come in at a slim $2 and $1 respectively. The big price change this week was on PC3700 512MB, which is down $16 to $143, but it is important to note however, that this price change is a result of a vendor change as opposed to any industry-wide trend. DDR2 memory showed nominal drops through the listings, but a $4 cut to DDR2-667 512MB was the largest of the bunch.

RDRAM

Unlike the multitude of price fluctuations reported in our last guide, RDRAM prices seem to have settled down somewhat, and we only list a single price change for this week. This week finds PC800 ECC 512-MB down $8 to $148.

Overall

Overall system memory prices are a bit varied this week, and actual savings will depend on the exact memory type you are looking for. The price drop on PC3700 512MB may very well make some consider the purchase this week, as it really is the only double digit price cut we've seen in a little. DDR2 prices also are going down a bit, making it a more attractive upgrade option as well. Until next week, happy upgrading and remember to verify prices on the vendor's website should you decide now is the time to buy.

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
