Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of August 15, 2005 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal August 15, 2005

SDRAM

While SDRAM prices are usually prone to multiple smaller price changes, this week we see almost total stability. The only price change to report here is a slim $1 savings on PC133 CAS3 128-MB. The situation didn't change for consumers who held off a week in buying, but it's bad news for those hopeful to score a bit of savings this week on their memory upgrade.

DDR / DDR2

Overall DDR prices do offer some substantial savings to consumers this week. While the PC2100, PC2700, PC3200, and PC3500 modules only show small $1 and $2 changes, if any at all, we do see more price cuts hitting the PC3700 to PC4200 range. There is a nice $8 savings on PC3700 256-MB along with a $13 drop on PC4200 512-MB, which is now selling for $127. Thrown into the mix is a $4 increase on PC4000 512-MB modules. Five is the magic number for DDR2 modules as DDR2-533 256-MB, DDR2-533 512-MB and DDR2-667 512-MB are all down in price by $5 this week, while DDR2-667 256-MB is holding steady at $64, right where it has been for several weeks now.

RDRAM

RDRAM prices for the week are surprisingly favorable, with all price changes (where there is a change) translating into lower prices. PC800 256-MB is down $4 to $68 and those looking for PC800 ECC 256-MB will save a couple dollars as well. This week a single stick of PC800 ECC 512-MB will cost you $122, a decent savings over our last guide. As always, when looking 512-MB varieties of RDRAM we strongly suggest you read the fine print to ensure you are buying a single stick, rather than a kit (2x 256-MB), as those details are sometimes hidden in the small print.

Overall

As we hit the middle of August, your brick-and-mortar stores may be offering "back to school" sales galore, but its obvious by our prices this week that computer memory isn't falling into this category at all. Still, at certain sale times throughout the year you can always check a few local national chain computer & hardware stores and see if they are offering competitive prices. Additionally for those who would prefer to buy local it never hurts to ask if they will price-match an Internet vendor, which would also save you from possibly paying shipping charges on top of the memory cost.

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
