Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of February 27, 2006 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal February 27, 2006

SDRAM

Following a month of very little change in SDRAM prices, we are seeing a bit more activity this week. The good news is that all the changes recorded are in the form of slight price drops. PC133 CAS3 128-MB and PC133 CAS3 256-MB are both down in price by $3 and $1 respectively. PC133 CAS2 256-MB dropped by $1 and we have a bit nicer $4 price cut to PC133 CAS2 512-MB, which is now selling for $91. This is also the first time we've seen PC133 CAS2 512-MB come down in price this year.

DDR / DDR2

While a quick look at DDR prices shows a few price drops, these are small dollar amounts compared to some of the increases we have to report on this week. DDR price savings come in small numbers with $1 being shaved off the cost of several DDR modules. PC4000 256-MB is down $4 to $40 and an additional $3 savings can be found on PC4000 1-GB. Unfortunately, this week we see an $8 increase to PC4000 512-MB (now at $99), while PC3700 256-MB is up $6 to $41.

RDRAM

RDRAM prices are a real mixed bag this week. While most price changes reflect small savings for consumers, we do have a couple which have increased in price. Starting with the good news, we find a $1 savings on PC800 256-MB, PC800 ECC 256-MB and PC800 ECC 512-MB are both down in price by $2, and there is a $3 drop on PC800 512-MB. We also see pricing activity on all PC1066 modules, as PC1066 256-MB (184 pin) and PC1066 512-MB (184 pin) are up by $1 and $2, respectively. Making up for these two slight increases however is PC1066 256-MB (232 pin), which is now at $62, a $10 savings over our last update.

Overall

This week we're seeing a couple of the larger price drops this year, in terms of dollar amount, on a few select models. It's definitely good news if you happen to be in the market for PC133 CAS2 512-MB or PC1066 256-MB (232 pin). Compared to our previous Memory Price Guides in January and February, we are seeing more modules coming down slightly in price, compared to very consistent prices. While small and consistent $1 and $2 price drops may not seem like much, over time, these can really add up to a nice savings in some areas.

While actual price drops can help out consumers, Internet shoppers would do well to keep an eye out for shipping deals or work out a purchase with a friend, as shipping discounts are often given based on the total invoice amount. In the end, nabbing a good shipping deal could save you more money than the small week-to-week price cuts.

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
